Trilogy Metals finishes 42-hole Alaska field program and names David Thomas to lead Arctic development

All 42 planned holes were drilled over about 5,200 meters at the Upper Kobuk project, and Ambler Metals named a mining engineer with 40 years of experience to run Arctic development.

TMQLatest quote

Trilogy Metals said Oct. 21 that Ambler Metals finished every hole planned for the 2026 summer season at the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in Alaska, 42 holes over approximately 5,200 meters, and appointed David Thomas senior vice president of project development. The release sets no financial results alongside the operational update and puts two permitting targets on the record: a draft Environmental Impact Statement for October 2027 and a Record of Decision for September 2028.

All 42 planned holes finished at Arctic's proposed footprints

Trilogy Metals said the 2026 summer campaign at the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in northwestern Alaska is complete, with all priority objectives for the season achieved. Ambler Metals drilled 42 holes over roughly 5,200 meters of ground, covering geotechnical, hydrogeological, condemnation and exploration work. The holes were concentrated at the waste-rock storage facilities and tailings footprint proposed for the Arctic mine, plus groundwater characterization targets, a layout chosen to inform mine design and infrastructure placement and to support permit applications rather than to deliver headline assays. The land package spans 190,929 hectares (471,796 acres) and hosts Arctic, a high-grade polymetallic deposit, and Bornite, a copper-cobalt deposit.

A 100-kilometer belt gets ranked for a heavier 2027

Alongside the mine-site program, Ambler Metals completed drill-target assessments of known mineral occurrences across the 100-kilometer (60-mile) volcanogenic massive sulfide belt that hosts Arctic, a belt carrying about 30 known historic occurrences and electromagnetic anomalies. Trilogy said the results will be used to rank and prioritize targets and are expected to underpin planning for accelerated exploration and development drilling in 2027. Crews are now on equipment maintenance and repairs ahead of a field restart planned for April/May 2027. Chief executive Tony Giardini framed the shift in scale: "We anticipate 2027 being a significant step up in activity: exploration and development drilling at Bornite and along the VMS belt, continued engineering at Arctic, and a Draft Environmental Impact Statement targeted for October 2027."

A build-phase engineer takes over Arctic development

Ambler Metals appointed David Thomas as Senior Vice President of Project Development, with responsibility for engineering and project development on Arctic alongside president Ron Rimelman. Thomas is a civil engineer with more than 40 years of underground and open-pit mining experience. He was most recently chief operating officer of Freedom Copper and, before that, vice president of Ausenco USA, where he provided engineering oversight for economic assessments, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies. His Alaska record includes work at the Red Dog, Fort Knox, Pogo and Kensington mines during his tenure as president of Alaska Interstate Construction, and he holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington. Rimelman tied the hire to the permitting stage: "As the Arctic Project advances through permitting, our focus is shifting from defining the project to preparing to build it, and Dave brings the expertise we need at this stage."

Permitting dates now set the calendar

Trilogy's release puts two dated targets on the record: a draft Environmental Impact Statement in October 2027 and a Record of Decision in September 2028, after which the joint venture would weigh a construction decision. Those dates sit on an existing technical base, a 2023 NI 43-101 feasibility study and a 2022 S-K 1300 technical report summary that estimate an average grade of about 5% copper equivalent from probable mineral reserves. Ownership shapes how that calendar reaches shareholders. Ambler Metals is a 50/50 joint venture equally owned with South32 Limited, and Trilogy holds a 50% joint venture interest, so permitting spending and milestone risk are shared while the value of Trilogy's stake depends on decisions both partners make. Giardini described the positioning this way: "With Dave Thomas now leading project development, the joint venture is positioning Arctic for a potential construction decision following a Record of Decision, targeted for September 2028."

What the filing leaves out

The Form 8-K carries Item 7.01 regulation FD disclosure and Item 9.01 exhibits, and the release is furnished rather than filed, signed for the company by chief financial officer Elaine Sanders. It reports no assay results from the 42 holes, no updated resource estimate, no program budget, no cash balance and no year-earlier drilling totals, so the 2026 season cannot yet be measured against 2025 on a like-for-like basis. It is also not an earnings report: there are no revenue, loss or per-share figures, and the only substantive exhibit is the release itself. Whether the season changed the economics of Arctic depends on data those holes were drilled to produce, and none of it has been published in this filing.
