Heartland Express returns to a $1.0 million profit as its operating ratio improves to 98.7%

Heartland Express, Inc. reported net income of $1.0 million, or $0.01 a basic share, for the three months ended September 30, 2026, reversing a net loss of $8.3 million, or $0.11 a share, a year earlier, even as operating revenue fell to $179.5 million from $196.5 million.

A 500 basis point operating ratio gain on lower revenue

Heartland Express improved its operating ratio to 98.7% from 103.7% in the third quarter of 2025, a 500 basis point gain, and its non-GAAP adjusted operating ratio to 97.6% from 103.5%. Net income equaled 0.5% of operating revenue, against a net loss a year earlier.

The revenue line complicates that improvement. Operating revenue fell to $179.5 million from $196.5 million, yet fuel surcharge revenue rose to $32.7 million from $24.1 million. The surcharge passes through fuel prices rather than freight rates, so the underlying freight revenue declined by more than the headline figure suggests.

Cost lines moved the other way. The income statement shows lower salaries, wages and benefits, lower insurance and claims, lower depreciation and amortization and lower operations and maintenance than a year earlier, while fuel expense rose. Chief Executive Mike Gerdin described the quarter as one of "significant operating ratio improvement (98.7%) as compared to the third quarter of 2025 (103.7%)", credited "stronger freight volumes and improved customer pricing resulting from ongoing industry capacity reductions", and said the company does "not expect the positive impacts of ongoing contract negotiations to be fully reflected in our operating results until 2027".

One caveat sits inside the operating result. The income statement, which reports in thousands, shows operating income of 2.3 million against a 7.83 million gain on disposal of property and equipment, so before equipment sales the freight operation ran below break-even. Gerdin also flagged that "Our operating expenses were significantly impacted by rising fuel costs throughout the quarter, along with inflationary impacts to maintenance, repairs, and other employee-related costs."

Debt paydown and a smaller balance sheet

Cash stood at $48.5 million on September 30, up $30.0 million since December 31, 2025. Reported debt of $99.9 million remained, down from $494.1 million of combined debt and finance lease obligations tied to the 2022 Smith Transport and Contract Freighters acquisitions. Heartland paid $35 million against acquisition-related debt during the quarter and $59.9 million of debt and finance lease obligations over nine months, with no borrowings on its unsecured line and $88.8 million of capacity left after $11.2 million of letters of credit. Stockholders' equity was $754.1 million and total assets $1.1 billion.

For the nine months, operating revenue was $539.9 million against $626.4 million, operating income was $15.6 million, an improvement of $50.2 million from a year earlier, and net income was $6.7 million, or $0.09 a share. A year earlier the company posted losses at both the operating and net lines. Cash from operations reached $55.1 million, or 10.2% of operating revenue, while the company spent $4.6 million on dividends and $4.6 million on buybacks and took in $44.7 million from net property and equipment transactions. It repurchased 183,371 shares for $2.2 million in the quarter.

Fleet spending, the dividend and the missing outlook

The fleet got younger: tractors averaged 2.3 years against 2.6 years a year earlier, trailers 7.1 years against 7.5. For the rest of 2026, Heartland expects net capital spending of roughly $2 to $5 million and $9 to $13 million of gains on equipment disposals. It declared a $0.02 quarterly dividend, paid October 7, 2026, and has paid $566.1 million of cumulative cash dividends. Shares outstanding were 77.2 million, with 4.5 million still authorized for repurchase, which the release says "would result in 72.7 million outstanding shares if fully executed."

The release, filed as Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1 on October 21, 2026, left the forward picture thin. It offered no revenue or earnings guidance and no conference-call details, and it did not quantify current-quarter volume or pricing trends. The figures it did give point in two directions: contract negotiations are expected to help only from 2027, while fuel and maintenance costs are already pressing on the expense base and equipment gains are carrying part of the operating result.
