What “Source checked” means

U.S. and European banking supervisors are increasing scrutiny of artificial intelligence, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing six people familiar with the matter. The focus includes control of autonomous systems and banks’ ability to recover from cyber disruption.

According to Reuters, the Federal Reserve, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation are asking how lenders monitor AI agents, audit their decisions and stop them exceeding their authority. The agencies declined to comment. The report says U.S. regulators are still gathering information rather than prescribing responses.

British supervisors are encouraging major banks to examine recovery systems independent of their main technology infrastructure, Reuters reported. The Bank of England declined to comment.

The distinction matters: questions about banks’ controls do not by themselves establish a new binding rule.

Separately, the Financial Stability Board’s October 12 statement identified AI-related risks alongside sovereign-bond volatility and private-credit vulnerabilities. It said responsible AI adoption would remain on its agenda next year and introduced finalized sound practices incorporating public-consultation feedback.

That public statement provides broader policy context; it does not independently confirm Reuters’ account of confidential supervisory inquiries.
