Purchasing power calculator
Apply one constant annual inflation assumption to a sum of money and read it in both directions: what today’s amount would cost later, and what a future nominal amount buys in today’s money. This is a scenario, not a CPI measurement or a forecast.
Read the companion guide, How inflation changes purchasing power, or the transmission guide, How oil prices feed into inflation.
Scenario results
- Horizon
- 10 yr 0 mo
- Future cost of the same basket
- $1,343.92
- Today’s purchasing power of a future amount
- $744.09
- Cumulative price factor
- 1.3439×
If a basket costs 1000 today, a constant 3% annual rate would make the same basket cost about $1,343.92 after 10 yr 0 mo. That is not investment growth: no return on money is modeled. Read the other direction to see what a future nominal amount would buy in today’s money. Neither figure is a prediction.
Assumptions
- The annual rate is a constant you choose (-99% to 100%); it is not CPI, a forecast, or a personal inflation measure.
- No personal basket, taxes, income, returns or fees are modeled.
- No oil price, story figure or historical series is transferred into the inputs automatically.
- The combined horizon is 100 years (1200 months) or less, including the month fraction.
- Money is rounded to the nearest cent; ties of half a cent round up. Rounded results are supported up to $10 billion.
