What “Source checked” means

The University of Michigan's preliminary October reading of consumer sentiment fell to 46.3 from 48.1 in September as households turned sharply more negative on current conditions, while year-ahead inflation expectations ticked up to 4.7%, according to the Surveys of Consumers release posted Friday on sca.isr.umich.edu.

Current Economic Conditions dropped to 44.7 from 50.9, a 12.2% month-to-month decline and 23.7% below October 2025. That 44.7 print sits below the 45.8 Current Economic Conditions reading for May 2026 in the university's published components table through September, which was the lowest Current Index in that posted series before today's preliminary. The Index of Consumer Expectations moved the other way, rising to 47.3 from 46.3 — the first upturn in expectations after recent soft months, even as the headline slipped.

The headline Index of Consumer Sentiment is down 3.7% from September and 13.6% from October 2025's 53.6. Surveys of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu said sentiment was "little changed this month, inching down a scant 1.8 index points from September." Year-ahead expectations for personal finances and business conditions crept up slightly, she wrote, but "buying conditions for durables plummeted amid high prices and borrowing costs." Gains among Democrats and Republicans were offset by a decline among independents. Lower-income consumers and those with smaller stock portfolios "dropped steeply," groups she said have fewer resources to weather higher prices. Frustration over the cost of living continues to mount, with consumers across the political spectrum saying the economy's trajectory has weakened since the start of the year.

Inflation expectations climb for a second month

Year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7% from 4.6% in September. Hsu noted that the reading "substantially exceeds the 3.4% seen in February before the Iran conflict began, along with all 2024 readings." Long-run inflation expectations stepped up to 3.5% from 3.4%, above their 2024 range of 2.8% to 3.2%. Both horizons increased for the second straight month to their highest readings since May — a second consecutive monthly rise that keeps household inflation psychology elevated even as the expectations sub-index of sentiment itself improved.

Why the split reading matters for Fed watchers

A soft headline with a deep drop in current conditions and another uptick in inflation expectations is the combination markets watch into bank-earnings week and the next consumer-price report. The preliminary sample covers interviews from Sept. 22 to Oct. 5. Final October figures are due Friday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m. ET, when the university will show whether the fall in current conditions holds once the full month is counted. The release does not set Federal Reserve policy; it adds another household-mood and inflation-expectation datapoint after this week's Fed-personnel headlines and the still-open debate over whether officials firm policy again before year-end.

Hsu's durables warning is especially relevant for readers tracking rate-sensitive demand: high prices and borrowing costs are the survey's stated reasons buying conditions "plummeted," not a separate retail-sales number. That keeps the note on what the questionnaire measured — attitudes — rather than what cash registers rang.

What this does not settle

The preliminary print can revise on Oct. 23. It does not by itself settle the odds of an October or December rate move, and it does not measure spending. Readers still need the final October index, the next CPI, and the banks' October commentary to judge how far household caution is showing up in hard data. Until then, the cleanest read from Friday's primary is the split itself: current conditions much weaker, expectations a touch better, and inflation expectations higher for a second month.

UMich October sentiment slips to 46.3 as current conditions plunge

Michigan's early October consumer-sentiment index fell to 46.3 from 48.1 as people felt much worse about conditions right now. Current conditions dropped to 44.7. Short-term inflation expectations edged up to 4.7%. Final October numbers come Oct. 23.

Hsu: little changed (−1.8 pts); durables buying conditions plummeted; lower-income/smaller portfolios dropped steeply. Final Oct due Fri Oct 23 10am ET. Interviews Sep 22–Oct 5.

What is still unsettled

Final October figures are not out until Oct. 23, so the 46.3 / 44.7 preliminary can revise, and this survey does not by itself settle the Fed's next rate decision or measure actual retail spending.
