TSMC Suspends Steel-Structure Work Across Taiwan After Four Construction Workers Are Killed in Kaohsiung

The workers were killed on Tuesday during steel-structure construction in Kaohsiung. TSMC halted related work at the site and suspended similar steel-structure work at all its Taiwan construction sites pending an investigation.

Reporting by Reuters on Oct. 21, 2026, carried TSMC's emailed statement verbatim: four construction workers were killed on Tuesday, Oct. 20, during steel-structure construction at a new-factory site in Kaohsiung; TSMC and its construction contractor immediately suspended related construction work at the site and TSMC suspended similar steel-structure work at all its Taiwan construction sites pending its investigation; its on-site safety team is cooperating with the relevant authorities and the contractor to investigate and ensure appropriate remedial steps. Local reporting by The Formosan, placed the site in Kaohsiung's Nanzih District at the F22 P4 expansion project and reported that the Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration dispatched labor inspectors and ordered the site preserved. TSMC's statement named no contractor, identified no workers, stated no cause and described no effect on chip production, and this article claims none.

A construction death toll, not a production line, is what stopped work at TSMC this week — and the company widened the halt itself, to every similar job it has running in Taiwan.

Four construction workers were killed on Tuesday, Oct. 20, during steel-structure construction at a site for a new TSMC factory in Kaohsiung, in southern Taiwan, the company said on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in an emailed statement reported by Reuters.

"We and our construction contractor immediately suspended related construction work at the site, and we have also suspended similar steel structure work at all our construction sites across Taiwan pending our investigation," TSMC said in the statement.

A halt that reaches every TSMC construction site in Taiwan

The suspension has two tiers. Related construction work at the Kaohsiung site stopped immediately, on the company's own account, and the second tier reaches further: similar steel-structure work is suspended at all of TSMC's construction sites across Taiwan until the company's investigation is done. TSMC did not give a date or a condition for resumption beyond that investigation.

The statement was about construction work, and readers should hold it to exactly that scope. TSMC did not describe any effect on chip production at its operating factories, announced no revised construction schedule and put no financial figure on the halt. Nothing in the company's statement supports reading a building-site suspension as an output disruption, and this article does not present it as one.

Inspectors at the site, and a cause not yet established

TSMC said its on-site safety team is cooperating with the relevant authorities and with its construction contractor to investigate the incident and to ensure appropriate remedial steps are taken. The company did not name the contractor, did not identify the workers and did not state a cause.

Local reporting placed the site in Kaohsiung's Nanzih District, at the F22 site during work on the P4 expansion project, and reported that the Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration dispatched labor inspectors to the scene and ordered the site preserved pending an investigation. Early local reports put the toll at three workers killed with a fourth critically injured; TSMC's Wednesday statement confirmed that four workers had been killed.

What caused the deaths has not been established by any statement in the record so far. Until investigators report, the established facts are the deaths themselves, the two-tier suspension and the cooperation TSMC says is under way — not any theory of how the structure failed.

Why a construction halt draws a market audience

TSMC is the world's largest contract chip maker and a major supplier of the advanced chips powering the trend towards artificial intelligence, which is why a stoppage anywhere in its Taiwan building programme draws investor attention even when production is not implicated. The questions that matter now are investigative, not commercial: what the authorities and the company find, what remedial steps follow, and when steel-structure work is allowed to resume.

What remains unknown

The cause of the deaths, the identity of the contractor and the workers, the remedial steps the investigation will require, and any date for steel-structure work to restart are all still unknown. TSMC has said the suspension runs pending its investigation; the next material development is a finding, a resumption decision, or a further company statement — and any effect on the Kaohsiung project's construction timetable would have to come from the company or the authorities, not from inference.
