Musk Says Cybertruck Production Will Wind Down in Texas Around Mid-2027
The stainless-steel pickup once pitched at 250,000 sales a year is yielding its only factory to Tesla's robotaxi bet - and Musk has not said whether the truck itself survives.
Elon Musk said Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas gigafactory around mid-2027 to make room for the Cybercab robotaxi.
"Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production," Musk wrote.
The post, made overnight on X, is the only Tesla communication on the wind-down so far.
In replies on X, Musk called the Cybertruck the "best vehicle Tesla has ever made" and the wind-down the "end of an era," according to Reuters.
He also replied that the Cybertruck fleet "will be around for a long time."
What Musk did not say
Musk did not say whether Cybertruck production would move to another factory or end entirely.
That distinction is the whole question, because Gigafactory Texas is the only known Tesla plant equipped to build the truck's specialized components, Reuters reported.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, and the company has issued no statement or filing on the wind-down.
"Cybertruck was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab," lead engineer Wes Morrill said on X.
Asked about support for existing trucks, Morrill said Tesla will maintain spare parts and that service will continue.
Sales never matched the original pitch
Tesla began delivering the Cybertruck in late 2023, after years of hype that began with its 2019 unveiling.
Around the start of production, Musk predicted annual sales of 250,000 trucks.
U.S. sales reached 38,965 in 2024, then fell 48% to 20,237 in 2025, according to Kelley Blue Book estimates.
The slide continued this year: sales were 11,586 in the first nine months of 2026, down 28% from 16,097 a year earlier, Cox Automotive estimates show.
Third-quarter sales were 4,323 trucks, and Tesla groups the Cybertruck with its other models, which delivered 8,295 vehicles worldwide in the quarter.
The truck has also been recalled 11 times since it went on sale, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In October, Tesla cancelled Cybertruck plans for Australia and New Zealand, telling reservation holders the regional program had been discontinued.
The robotaxi taking the floor space
The Cybercab is a two-seat robotaxi with butterfly doors and no steering wheel, pedals or mirrors.
Tesla began Cybercab production at Gigafactory Texas earlier this year, and paid Cybercab rides started in Austin in September.
About 570 of the more than 1,200 Tesla robotaxis operating in Texas are Cybercabs, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles, via Reuters.
Tesla lists installed Cybercab capacity of more than 125,000 vehicles a year, but the program is still small and unlikely to replace Cybertruck volumes soon, Reuters reported.
The safety agency opened an audit in September into how Tesla certified the Cybercab as compliant with federal safety standards.
Shares rebounded with the market, not on the news
Tesla shares closed Thursday at $343.69, down 10.77%, in a post-election rout that pre-dated Musk's post.
At 11:10 a.m. ET on Friday, the shares traded at $358.28, up 4.24%, as the broader market rebounded after Thursday's selloff.
No part of Friday's rebound can be cleanly attributed to the Cybertruck news, which arrived overnight before a strong jobs report reset the session.
What remains unknown
Whether the Cybertruck ends in mid-2027 or moves elsewhere remains unknown, and Musk's wording does not settle it.
Tesla has given no final build date, no Cybercab production target for the freed space, and no word on jobs at the Texas plant.
What to watch: any Tesla statement or filing confirming the truck's fate, the fourth-quarter deliveries release, and Cybercab production updates.
