Synopsys pairs OpenAI chip-design deal with a 15% fiscal 2027 growth outlook

The September 30 announcements combine a revenue-sharing AI partnership with an $11.15 billion sales midpoint, while leaving commercialization milestones to prove.

What “Source checked” means

Synopsys announced a multiyear partnership with OpenAI on September 30 to develop a specialized chip-design model, alongside a fiscal 2027 revenue outlook calling for approximately 15% growth. The investment question is how the proposed service would add revenue to an established engineering-software business, rather than simply automate work already covered by its licenses.

The companies plan to develop GPT-Synopsys around Synopsys' electronic design automation tools, which engineers use to design and verify semiconductors. Their agreement includes revenue sharing and joint sales efforts. OpenAI will license the tools for model development; Synopsys said early technology engagements with semiconductor customers were underway.

How the proposed business model works

Chief Executive Sassine Ghazi told Reuters that OpenAI would pay Synopsys a training subscription fee and that the companies would share customer revenue based on improvements the model makes to a chip's design. Reuters reported the arrangement on September 30. Neither company's percentage of that revenue is specified in the partnership release.

That structure matters because it creates two potential revenue sources: payments during model development and participation in customer use. It does not establish how much revenue either stream will produce, how quickly customers will adopt the service, or whether the economics will offset the costs of delivering it.

Synopsys said the planned service would bundle computing capacity, the model and software licenses on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure. The release describes development and early customer work, rather than announcing general availability on a specified date. Its anticipated capabilities remain forward-looking claims.

Guidance is broader than one partnership

At the same investor day, Synopsys set a fiscal 2027 revenue target of $11.1 billion–$11.2 billion, with a midpoint of $11.15 billion. The fiscal year ends October 31, 2027. Its roughly 15% growth expectation covers the company, not disclosed GPT-Synopsys revenue.

The company also projected an operating-margin midpoint of approximately 20.7% under generally accepted accounting principles and 44.0% on its non-GAAP measure. The gap reflects excluded expenses including acquired-intangible amortization, stock-based compensation and restructuring. Those measures should not be treated as interchangeable profitability targets.

Management said it intended to repurchase approximately $1 billion of shares over the coming months, subject to market conditions. That is a stated plan, not evidence that purchases have already occurred.

Verification remains part of the product

Ghazi told Reuters that outputs would still be checked with conventional Synopsys tools to verify that a chip would work. Faster design exploration therefore does not eliminate engineering validation.

For readers tracking the commercial case, the useful next evidence is a defined availability timetable, measurable customer results and clearer revenue contribution. The announced partnership gives Synopsys a route to sell additional AI-enabled services; the September 30 outlook and product ambitions still require execution.
