Stryker to invest about $400 million in CMR Surgical and take exclusive U.S. rights to Versius
The preferred stake comes with an exclusive option to buy CMR later and makes Stryker the sole U.S. sales agent for the Versius robot.

Based on Stryker's Oct. 12 announcement of the CMR Surgical alliance, CMR's December 2025 Versius Plus FDA clearance release, contemporaneous MassDevice reporting on that clearance, StockTitan's Oct. 12 account of the Stryker terms, and public market data for Stryker's share price.
Deal terms are from Stryker's Oct. 12, 2026 announcement. The preferred equity investment, exclusive acquisition option and U.S. sales-agency role are subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions; this story does not treat CMR as acquired. Versius Plus FDA clearance for cholecystectomy is from CMR's December 2025 clearance reporting; additional U.S. indications are described only as being advanced, not named, in those materials. Stryker's Friday close and Monday session quote come from public market data.
Stryker said Monday it will put about $400 million of preferred equity into CMR Surgical and become the exclusive U.S. seller of CMR's Versius soft-tissue surgical robot, with an option to buy the company later.
What Stryker is putting up
Stryker said Monday it will invest about $400 million, or £300 million, of preferred equity in CMR Surgical, a privately held Cambridge, U.K., robotics company. The money is meant to fund further work on CMR's Versius soft-tissue surgical robot and its commercial rollout, and the investment is still subject to customary closing conditions.
The preferred stake also gives Stryker an exclusive option to buy all of CMR's outstanding equity later, on terms set in the agreement. Separately, Stryker will be the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius portfolio, while CMR keeps leading product development and sales outside the United States. Andy Pierce, Stryker's group president for MedSurg and Neurotechnology, is expected to join CMR's board.
That package is an alliance and an option, not a completed takeover of CMR. Stryker said the transaction still needs regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Why Stryker wants soft-tissue robotics
Stryker already sells surgical equipment, endoscopy and visualization tools, and its Mako system for orthopedic robotics. Soft-tissue surgery — procedures in the abdomen and other cavities rather than joints — is a different market that the company has been circling for years.
Pierce called soft-tissue robotics a "high-growth adjacency" and a "thoughtful and disciplined entry," and said Stryker picked CMR because Versius can help hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers expand robotic programs across a range of procedures. CMR chief executive Massimiliano Colella said the investment strengthens CMR's ability to innovate and grow globally, and that Stryker's U.S. reach is a significant opportunity.
Where Versius stands in the U.S.
Versius is already used internationally for soft-tissue procedures. In the United States, CMR's next-generation Versius Plus system received FDA 510(k) clearance in December 2025 for cholecystectomy, or gallbladder removal, in adults. MassDevice reported that clearance at the time and said U.S. commercialization was planned for 2026. CMR's clearance materials say additional U.S. indications are being advanced; Monday's announcement does not name them.
Stryker's release describes Versius as a modular, second-generation platform designed to fit existing operating-room workflows. Neither company disclosed CMR's revenue, valuation for a full buyout under the option, or a timetable for exercising that option.
Scale for Stryker shareholders
Stryker closed Friday at $277.33 and was trading near $275.59 in the early Monday session, with a market value of about $105.7 billion, according to public market data. The $400 million preferred investment is less than half a percent of that market value — a TickerGrove calculation — so the near-term balance-sheet impact is modest. The strategic question is whether the U.S. agency role and the exclusive buyout option give Stryker a workable path into soft-tissue robotics without an all-cash acquisition today.
Why it matters for investors
For Stryker investors, Monday's deal is a defined entry into a segment the company has talked about for years, with a capped cash outlay and a future option rather than an immediate full purchase. For hospitals watching the robotics market, it pairs a large U.S. medtech sales force with a platform that already has a gallbladder clearance and a broader soft-tissue ambition.
Stryker to invest about $400 million in CMR Surgical and sell its Versius robot in the U.S.
Stryker, a large medical-device company, said Monday it will invest about $400 million in CMR Surgical, a U.K. company that makes the Versius surgical robot. Stryker will also be the only U.S. seller of Versius and gets an option to buy all of CMR later. The investment still needs regulatory approvals and is not a completed takeover.
Stryker / CMR: ~$400M preferred equity + exclusive acquire option + exclusive U.S. Versius agency; regulatory conditions remain
Stryker Oct. 12, 2026: approximately $400 million (£300 million) preferred equity investment in CMR Surgical (Cambridge, UK; private; Versius / Versius Plus soft-tissue robot) to support innovation and global commercialization, subject to customary closing conditions. Exclusive option for Stryker to acquire 100% of CMR outstanding equity in the future, subject to agreement terms. Stryker exclusive U.S. sales agent for Versius; CMR leads development/commercialization outside U.S. Andy Pierce (Group President, Medsurg and Neurotechnology) to join CMR board. Quotes: Pierce high-growth adjacency / disciplined entry; Colella (CMR CEO) milestone / U.S. growth. Subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions — agreement/alliance, not a completed acquisition. Context: Versius Plus FDA 510(k) clearance Dec 2025 for cholecystectomy (adults); MassDevice contemporaneous report; CMR says additional U.S. indications are being advanced without naming them in the clearance materials. Market: SYK previous close $277.33 Oct 9/10 session end Friday; Oct 12 ~9:46 AM ET $275.59; market cap ~$105.71B (Stock Analysis). TickerGrove calc: $400M / $105.71B ≈ 0.38%.
What is still unknown
Stryker has not disclosed CMR's revenue or valuation, the precise preferred-share terms, which regulatory approvals are required, when the exclusive acquisition option can be exercised, or what price that option would imply. The investment has not closed.
