SpaceX agrees to buy Grain's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum for Starlink Mobile

Grain will sell its nationwide 800 MHz licenses to SpaceX for Starlink Mobile. The deal needs FCC approval; the price was not disclosed. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile fell in after-hours trading.

Grain Management definitive-agreement release dated Oct. 8, 2026 (16:17 ET on PR Newswire); SpaceX X announcement and statement quotes the same day; MarketWatch after-hours share moves are extended-session prints reported Oct. 8, not the U.S. cash close.

What “Source checked” means

SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's nationwide 800 megahertz spectrum portfolio, a definitive deal meant to give Starlink Mobile low-band coverage for a push into U.S. wireless service that still needs Federal Communications Commission approval.

Grain Management said on Oct. 8, 2026, that it had signed a definitive agreement for SpaceX to acquire 100% of Grain's nationwide 800 MHz licenses. The companies described a portfolio of up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum. Closing depends on FCC approval and other customary conditions, and neither side disclosed the purchase price.

SpaceX framed the licenses as the low-band piece of Starlink Mobile. In a company post on X, it said the agreement would "pave the way" for Starlink to become a major mobile carrier in the United States. A SpaceX statement carried by Via Satellite said Starlink Mobile's existing 2 GHz mid-band spectrum is meant for high-bandwidth capacity, while the new 800 MHz layer is meant to penetrate walls and reach devices indoors. Most existing phones already support the band, SpaceX said. With its second-generation Starlink Mobile satellites, the company said it would be the first network operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum for a single service that aims to work indoors, outdoors, and in cellular dead zones.

Elon Musk, SpaceX's chief executive, wrote on X that the licenses were "the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America."

What Grain sold — and what T-Mobile sold first

Grain, a digital-infrastructure investor, acquired the same nationwide 800 MHz block from T-Mobile in August 2026 for $2.9 billion in cash plus Grain's 600 MHz licenses, according to MarketWatch and Via Satellite. Grain's release said that earlier transfer closed under an FCC order from July 2026 that set a competitive path for direct-to-device use. BDT & MSD Partners advised Grain on the SpaceX sale; Milbank and Latham & Watkins handled legal and regulatory work.

After-hours hit to the Big Three

In after-hours trading after the announcement, AT&T shares fell 7.9% to $22.90, Verizon dropped 7.2%, and T-Mobile slid 7.5%, while SpaceX rose 1.1% to $162.49, MarketWatch reported. Those are extended-session moves, not the U.S. cash close, and they may not hold when regular trading resumes.

The competitive framing matters because AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon recently advanced their own satellite joint venture for underserved coverage — a path TickerGrove covered when the carriers signed that agreement without Starlink. SpaceX's spectrum purchase is a separate bet: own low-band licenses, pair them with its constellation, and sell mobile service under Starlink Mobile rather than only wholesale connectivity to the incumbents.

Via Satellite noted that the FCC had also recently approved SpaceX plans to deploy 15,000 satellites optimized for the Starlink Mobile direct-to-device network.

SpaceX agrees to buy low-band spectrum for Starlink Mobile

SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide block of 800 MHz wireless licenses from Grain Management so Starlink Mobile can offer phone service that works better indoors. The deal still needs FCC approval, and the price was not disclosed. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile shares fell sharply after hours.

SpaceX strikes definitive deal for Grain's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum

Oct. 8, 2026: Grain definitive agreement — SpaceX acquires 100% of Grain nationwide 800 MHz portfolio; up to 14 MHz paired; FCC + customary conditions; price undisclosed. SpaceX: low-band for indoor/wall penetration alongside 2 GHz mid-band; first operator targeting both satellite and terrestrial spectrum for Starlink Mobile; FCC recently approved 15,000 Starlink Mobile sats (Via Satellite). Musk: last critical spectrum piece for complete U.S. phone coverage. Grain bought block from T-Mobile Aug 2026 for $2.9B cash + Grain 600 MHz (MW/Via). MW AH: AT&T −7.9% to $22.90; Verizon −7.2%; T-Mobile −7.5%; SpaceX +1.1% to $162.49.

What is still unsettled

SpaceX and Grain did not publish the purchase price or a dated FCC decision deadline, and it remains unsettled how quickly Starlink Mobile could match urban indoor coverage without a large terrestrial tower build.
