Southwest Airlines Co. reported third-quarter 2026 operating revenue of $8.42 billion, up 21.2% from a year earlier and a third-quarter record, as unit revenue rose 21.6% on capacity that was 0.4% lower. Net income was $270 million, or $0.55 a diluted share; adjusted net income was $328 million, or $0.66 a share.

Operating expenses rose 16.3% to $8.04 billion, leaving operating income of $379 million against $35 million in the same quarter of 2025 and an operating margin of 4.5%, up 4.0 points. Excluding special items, operating income was $452 million and operating margin 5.4%, up 4.8 points from a year earlier. Both the reported and the adjusted results include a $214 million third-quarter gain on aircraft and engine sales and sale-leasebacks, against a much smaller gain on sale of property and equipment a year earlier; the release attributes $96 million to retiring aircraft and engine sales and $118 million to sale-leasebacks. The non-GAAP reconciliation removes impairments, severance and litigation accruals but leaves that gain in place, so the 5.4% adjusted operating margin and the $0.66 adjusted EPS both retain it; excluding the year-over-year increase in asset-sale gains, the operating improvement would be far smaller than 4.0 points.

Fares, not seats, carried the revenue record

The record did not come from flying more aircraft seats. Capacity, measured in available seat miles, was 0.4% lower than a year earlier, revenue passenger miles fell 0.4% and revenue passengers carried fell 3.2% from a year earlier, leaving load factor flat at 79.8%. The increase came from price instead: the company reported record third-quarter passenger revenue and the highest passenger yield in its history. Unit revenue, or operating revenue per available seat mile, rose 21.6% from a year earlier to 18.55 cents, which Southwest described as an all-time record, and it said managed business revenue set a third-quarter record.

Bob Jordan, Southwest's president and chief executive, said: "Demand remained strong as we lapped last year's bag fee and other commercial initiatives, reinforcing our belief that the earnings power we've built is durable, even with significantly higher fuel costs."

Fuel at $3.92 a gallon meets a fourth quarter priced near $4.55

The margin gain survived a large cost increase. Aircraft fuel and related taxes cost $2.15 billion, up from $1.33 billion a year earlier, and the all-in cost per gallon rose to $3.92 from $2.40. Southwest put the fuel increase at $821 million and said it represented a $1.08 headwind to adjusted EPS. Non-fuel unit costs moved far more slowly: operating expenses per available seat mile excluding fuel, special items and profit sharing, the measure the company calls CASM-X, rose 3.8% from a year earlier to 12.68 cents. The adjusted figures exclude long-lived asset impairments, severance and related costs, and litigation accruals.

The fourth quarter carries a higher fuel price than the third. Southwest assumes fuel at approximately $4.55 a gallon on the October 15 forward curve, and guides adjusted EPS of $0.55 to $0.80, unit revenue up 19% to 21% year over year, capacity up 3% to 4% and CASM-X up 4.0% to 4.5%, a range that includes a 1.0 point headwind from removing six seats from the Boeing 737-700 fleet to enable extra legroom seating. For the full year it guides adjusted EPS of $2.60 to $2.85, capacity growth of approximately 1.2% versus last guidance of approximately 1.5%, net capital spending of $2.5 billion to $2.75 billion, 67 Boeing 737-8 and 737-7 deliveries and about 60 retirements.

No buybacks in the quarter while air traffic liability built

Southwest ended the quarter with $5.6 billion of liquidity, made up of $3.6 billion of cash and cash equivalents and a $2.0 billion revolving credit line, with gross leverage of 1.9x and unencumbered aircraft and related assets carrying a net book value of approximately $15.8 billion. It paid $176 million of dividends and repurchased no shares in the quarter, having bought back $1.25 billion in the first nine months of 2026; $450 million remains under the $2.0 billion authorization. Current air traffic liability rose to $7.08 billion from $5.95 billion at December 31, 2025, tickets sold and paid for but not yet flown, an obligation rather than recognised revenue. Trailing-twelve-month non-GAAP after-tax return on invested capital was 11.3%.

The release compares results only with Southwest's own prior guidance, not with any analyst consensus: unit revenue rose 21.6% year over year, above prior guidance, while fuel at $3.92 a gallon ran above the $3.70 to $3.75 assumed and full-year capacity growth guidance was cut to approximately 1.2% from approximately 1.5%. The release carries no analyst consensus, no market reaction and no free cash flow target, so this article makes no beat-or-miss claim and no forecast of its own. The dated items are a conference call at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time on October 22, 2026, and a Capital Markets Day in New York City on March 2, 2027, where management says it will set out a multi-year financial framework and the targets it is managing toward.
