The Progressive Corporation (NYSE: PGR) reported results for the month ended August 31, 2026. Companywide combined ratio was 89.3, up 6.2 points from 83.1 a year earlier. Net income was $951 million, or $1.63 per diluted common share, versus $1.220 billion and $2.07 in August 2025. Premiums and policies still grew
Net premiums written were $7.605 billion in August, up 6% from $7.199 billion a year earlier. Net premiums earned were $7.354 billion, up 5% from $7.036 billion. Policies in force rose 7% to 40.492 million from 37.890 million. Personal Lines policies were 39.247 million, up 7%, and Commercial Lines were 1.245 million, up 4%. Inside Personal Lines, Direct auto and Agency auto both grew, while Property policies were essentially flat at 3.647 million.
Combined ratio moved higher
The companywide combined ratio was 89.3, versus 83.1 in August 2025. The loss and loss-adjustment expense ratio was 68.8 and the expense ratio was 20.5. Personal Lines combined ratio was 88.0 and Commercial Lines was 97.5. Net catastrophe losses were 1.9% of earned premiums companywide; the release ties those losses to severe weather across the United States. Calendar-year actuarial adjustments reduced reserves by $79 million in the month, and favorable prior-accident-year development totaled $131 million.
Earnings fell even with investment gains
Net income of $951 million was 22% below August 2025. Diluted earnings per share available to common shareholders were $1.63, down 21% from $2.07. Pretax net realized gains on securities were $108 million, up from $78 million. Investment income was $346 million in the month. Year to date through August 31, net income was $8.041 billion, nearly unchanged from $8.052 billion in the same period of 2025, while year-to-date combined ratio was 87.2.
Balance-sheet snapshot and repurchase
As of August 31, 2026, Progressive reported total investments of $99.672 billion, shareholders' equity of $35.357 billion, and book value of $60.92 per common share. Debt-to-total capital was 19.2%. In August the company repurchased 630,912 common shares at an average cost of $210.93.
