Philip Morris Beats Third-Quarter Forecasts as Smoke-Free Products Pass 40% of Revenue, but Reported Profit Falls on a Fair-Value Adjustment
Adjusted earnings of $2.36 a share topped the $2.29 consensus and revenue of $11.44 billion beat the $11.28 billion estimate, while reported earnings fell 4.9% to $2.12 and the full-year forecast was trimmed for currency, not raised.

Philip Morris International's third-quarter and first nine-months 2026 results release of Oct. 21, 2026 reported net revenues up 5.5 percent to 11.4 billion dollars, adjusted diluted earnings of 2.36 dollars a share up 5.4 percent, reported diluted earnings of 2.12 dollars a share down 4.9 percent primarily due to a non-cash fair value adjustment for equity investments, gross profit of 7.9 billion dollars, operating income of 4.9 billion dollars up 14.1 percent, total shipments up 0.6 percent driven by smoke-free shipments up 2.7 percent, smoke-free products above 40 percent of quarterly net revenues and available in 110 markets, first nine-months net revenues of 32.78 billion dollars, and a full-year forecast of reported diluted earnings of 7.11 to 7.26 dollars and adjusted diluted earnings of 8.29 to 8.44 dollars including a favorable currency impact of 0.18 dollars, previously 0.24 dollars, with the excluding-currency range unchanged at 8.11 to 8.26 dollars. A separate company update on Sept. 8, 2026 had set the adjusted forecast at 8.35 to 8.50 dollars on the larger currency assumption. Reporting on Oct. 21, 2026 put quarterly revenue at 11.44 billion dollars against an estimate of 11.28 billion dollars and adjusted profit of 2.36 dollars a share against an average estimate of 2.29 dollars, on estimates compiled by a single data provider, which is the only consensus source used in this article.

Philip Morris delivered the beat its smoke-free strategy promises, and a reminder that its reported profit line now moves with items that have little to do with selling cigarettes or nicotine pouches.
Philip Morris International reported third-quarter results on Wednesday, Oct. 21, with net revenues of $11.44 billion, up 5.5% from a year earlier, and adjusted earnings of $2.36 a share, up 5.4%. The earnings figure beat the consensus estimate of $2.29 a share, and revenue of $11.44 billion beat the $11.28 billion estimate, according to Reuters. Reported diluted earnings fell 4.9% to $2.12 a share, from $2.23, primarily because of a non-cash fair value adjustment for equity investments, and the company updated its full-year adjusted forecast to $8.29 to $8.44 a share for currency only. Group Chief Executive Jacek Olczak called it “another excellent quarter, with growing total volumes, double-digit organic operating income growth and robust margin expansion.”
Smoke-free is now more than two-fifths of the business
The mix shift did the strategic work in the quarter. Smoke-free products accounted for more than 40% of total net revenues in the third quarter and around 42% in the first nine months, are now available in 110 markets, and exceed 50% of net revenues in more than 30 markets. Smoke-free net revenues rose 4.1%, or 6.3% organically, while combustibles net revenues rose 6.4%, or 7.7% organically, so the legacy business funded the transition rather than merely shrinking beneath it. Total shipments rose 0.6% to 206.2 billion units, driven by a 2.7% increase in smoke-free product shipments, with shipment growth across all categories. Heated tobacco unit shipments were 41.5 billion units, up 1.5%, with heated tobacco adjusted in-market sales up 7.1%, and e-vapor shipments rose 61.6% as the VEEV brand expanded in Europe and launched in Indonesia and South Korea in August. ZYN nicotine pouches are now sold in 62 international markets.
Margins, not just volumes, carried the profit growth
Profitability outran revenue. Gross profit was $7.9 billion, up 6.7%, or 8.3% organically, with an adjusted gross profit margin of 68.7%, and operating income was $4.9 billion, up 14.1%, or 10.5% organically. By segment, international smoke-free net revenues were $3.9 billion, up 0.7%, or 3.4% organically, international combustibles net revenues were $6.7 billion, up 6.5%, or 7.8% organically, and United States net revenues were $800 million, up 22.7%. For the first nine months, net revenues were $32.78 billion, up 8.2%, operating income was $13.29 billion, up 15.4%, and adjusted operating income was $14.06 billion, up 10.6%, for an adjusted operating income margin of 42.9%, up from 42.0%. Adjusted earnings excluding currency rose 5.8% in the quarter, after a $0.01 currency headwind, which is the cleaner read on the operating performance than the reported line's decline.
The forecast moved for currency, not for the business
The guidance change is the part of this release most likely to be misread, so the table matters. The new full-year forecast is reported diluted earnings of $7.11 to $7.26 a share and, after total adjustments of $1.18 a share, adjusted diluted earnings of $8.29 to $8.44, up 9.9% to 11.9% from $7.54 in 2025. That range includes a favorable currency impact of $0.18 a share, previously $0.24, and excluding currency the forecast is $8.11 to $8.26 a share, up 7.5% to 9.5%. The excluding-currency range is unchanged from both the July second-quarter update and the September update: the September update had put the range at $8.35 to $8.50 only because it assumed the larger $0.24 currency benefit, so against the most recent vintage the headline range is six cents lower, not higher. Comparisons that show a raise are measuring against the older July range of $8.26 to $8.41. The operating assumptions did firm up in one respect: total shipment volume is now expected to be growing, rather than broadly stable to slightly growing, with organic net revenue growth of 5% to 7% seen as more likely in the middle or upper half of the range, while organic operating income growth of 7% to 9% is seen as more likely in the middle or lower half, given geopolitical cost impacts and a step-up in United States growth investments. Operating cash flow is forecast at around $13.5 billion, capital expenditures at $1.4 to $1.6 billion, the effective tax rate at around 21.5%, and net debt to adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization at close to 2.0 times by the end of 2026.
War costs are now written into the outlook
Management put the cost pressure in writing. While the impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict on the group remains manageable, it has had an increasing effect on the business, with energy-related inflation driving incremental cost pressures in the third quarter, and the full-year forecast assumes the rise in energy-related input prices will have a slightly higher impact in the fourth quarter as a larger proportion of the increases take effect. The company added that the long-term situation remains unpredictable, and it is difficult to assess the broader implications for consumers or the global cost environment. Separately, the evolution of the situation in Ukraine has caused disruptions this year, including strikes on supply chain and logistics infrastructure in certain locations, and the company said: “We expect this disruption to have an impact on our operating income this year.” No figure was put on that impact, which is the quarter's largest unquantified claim on the outlook. What to watch next is concrete: management's discussion on today's 9:00 a.m. Eastern webcast, hosted by Group Chief Financial Officer Massimo Andolina; whether the fourth-quarter energy impact stays at the slightly higher level the forecast assumes; whether the expected fourth-quarter reacceleration in international smoke-free arrives; and whether the stepped-up United States investment behind ZYN converts into shipment growth without eroding the margin expansion that carried this quarter.
