Parker-Hannifin reported record fiscal first-quarter sales of $5.99 billion on Thursday, as demand rose in every market the company serves.

Sales rose 17.9% from a year earlier in the quarter ended September 30, the first quarter of fiscal 2027. Organic sales, a measure that strips out acquisitions and currency, rose 11.5%.

Acquisitions contributed 6.9 percentage points of the reported growth. Currency and other effects, which the company said consisted of tariff-related returns to customers, subtracted 0.5 percentage point.

Adjusted earnings per share rose 23% to a record $8.90, above the $8.19 average estimate reported by Dow Jones Newswires. Reported net income rose 9% to $884 million, and reported diluted earnings per share rose 10% to $6.92.

"We experienced increased demand across all market verticals, resulting in double-digit organic sales growth and record backlog levels," said Jenny Parmentier, Parker's chairman and chief executive officer. "Strong market conditions, combined with execution of The Win Strategy, delivered record adjusted segment operating margin of 28.6% and adjusted earnings per share growth of 23%."

Orders point the same way as sales

Rolling 12-month order rates rose 13%, accelerating from 12% in the previous quarter. Order growth was double-digit in every business, and backlog climbed to a record $13.7 billion.

Aerospace Systems was the cleanest grower: sales rose 13.8% to $1.867 billion, almost entirely organic, at an adjusted segment operating margin of 30.7%. Diversified Industrial sales rose 20.6% to $4.152 billion, split between $2.445 billion in North America and $1.707 billion in International.

For the company as a whole, reported segment operating margin was 24.4%. The adjusted margin, which excludes acquisition-related items, reached a record 28.6%, up 1.2 percentage points from 27.4% a year earlier.

The outlook rises, except on a reported basis

Parker raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings outlook to $36.45 to $37.25 a share, from $34.25 to $35.25 previously. The new range sits above the $35.55 average analyst estimate reported by Dow Jones Newswires.

Organic sales growth is now expected at 7.5% to 10.5%, up from 5.5% to 8.5%, and adjusted segment operating margin at 27.7% to 28.1%. Reported sales growth is expected at 16.0% to 19.0%, including about nine percentage points from acquisitions, with free cash flow of $3.5 billion to $4.0 billion.

Reported earnings guidance moved the other way, to $29.65 to $30.45 a share. Most of the gap to the adjusted range is acquisition accounting, including $6.77 a share of expected amortization on acquired intangible assets.

Filtration Group is in, and so is its debt

Parker completed its acquisition of Filtration Group in August, and the updated outlook now includes the business for the full year. Filtration Group is expected to add about $1.8 billion to fiscal 2027 sales in its first ten and a half months under Parker, the company said when the deal closed.

The cash cost shows in the quarter's statements: Parker spent $9.102 billion on acquisitions, net of cash acquired. Total debt reached $17.48 billion at September 30, up from $8.52 billion at June 30, a TickerGrove calculation from the balance sheet, summing current and long-term borrowings.

Cash from operations was $752 million in the quarter against $109 million of capital spending. Free cash flow, which the company defines as operating cash flow less capital expenditures, was $643 million on the same calculation.

A strong open that faded with the market

Investors liked the print before the open: the shares jumped 6.5% in premarket trading, Reuters reported, and opened at $968.00. That opening price was 6.4% above Wednesday's close of $910.19, a TickerGrove calculation.

The gain did not hold as the broader market sold off on Thursday. Delayed market data showed the shares at $907.43 at 12:43 p.m. ET, down 0.3% on the day, after a session high of $976.14.

What remains unknown

How fast the Filtration integration pays back. Parker has targeted about $220 million of pretax cost synergies by the end of the third year, but the first-quarter release does not update that plan or break out integration costs ahead.

Whether the organic pace lasts. An 11.5% organic increase is unusually strong for Parker, and the release gives no month-by-month detail to judge whether demand accelerated or merely stayed strong through September.

Two more deals are still pending. The release's risk list names the acquisition of CIRCOR International's commercial and defense aerospace business and the integration of Curtis Instruments as not yet complete.

What to watch next

Watch the fiscal second-quarter report for the first full quarter of Filtration Group ownership, and for any synergy or integration-cost detail.

Watch the balance sheet. With total debt roughly double its June level, the pace of repayment out of the raised free-cash-flow outlook is now a standing question.

Watch order rates. A second straight double-digit quarter would support the raised organic outlook; a slip back toward the prior 12% pace would test it.
