OpenAI Reportedly Closes First $11 Billion at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation

The first money has landed, but at a smaller ambition than the company set out with in September.

What “Source checked” means

Bloomberg News reported on Friday that OpenAI has closed the first $11 billion of a funding round that values the company at $1.25 trillion, according to people familiar with the matter.

The funding is the initial part of a larger round that has not yet closed. No investor was named in the report, and OpenAI has not confirmed the close.

In venture funding, a first close means an initial set of commitments has funded while the round stays open. TechCrunch reported the same $11 billion figure on Friday.

A first close matters because it turns a target into committed money. Until Friday, the $20 billion figure was an ambition reported by others, not cash in hand.

A round that shrank before it closed

In late September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was looking to raise $30 billion. By October 31, the target had been cut by $10 billion.

Reuters reported on October 31 that OpenAI was then seeking $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation. The earlier aim had been $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation.

The sequence is the story. The ambition fell by a third between September and October, before a dollar of the new round was reported closed.

Against that revised $20 billion goal, the $11 billion now closed is 55%, a TickerGrove calculation. About $9 billion would still be needed to reach the full amount.

What the first close proves, and what it does not

The close shows that demand exists at a $1.25 trillion price for at least the first tranche. Investors were willing to commit eleven billion dollars on those terms.

It does not show that the full round will clear at the same price. The remaining money, the final terms and the investor list are all still undisclosed.

Nor does it show how the valuation was calculated. Neither report specified whether $1.25 trillion is a pre-money or post-money figure, and OpenAI has not said.

For a private company, a reported first close is also the only price signal available. There is no market reaction to read, because OpenAI shares do not trade publicly.

The March benchmark

OpenAI last announced a round on March 31. It said it had closed $122 billion in committed capital at a post-money valuation of $852 billion.

That round was anchored by Amazon, NVIDIA and SoftBank, with continued participation from Microsoft. OpenAI also raised over $3 billion from individual investors through bank channels.

The March announcement is the last company-confirmed benchmark for OpenAI's price. Everything since then, including Friday's valuation, rests on anonymous sourcing rather than a company statement.

Numerically, $1.25 trillion is about 47% above the March $852 billion mark, a TickerGrove calculation. Because the November basis was not specified, that is not a clean like-for-like step-up.

A cooler week for private AI prices

The report landed hours after Bloomberg reported that buyers of Anthropic IPO shares were eyeing a substantially lower valuation than targeted. Private AI prices were being tested on both sides of the rivalry.

What remains unknown

Which investors took part in this tranche is unknown, because neither report named any. Whether the round reaches about $20 billion, and on what final terms, is also unknown.

OpenAI had not responded to a request for comment when TechCrunch published. No company statement confirming the amount, the valuation or the timetable exists in the record.

The company's current revenue pace is also not in the November record. The March figure of $2 billion a month is seven months old and cannot be treated as current.

The weeks ahead

What to watch: whether the round closes in the coming weeks near $20 billion, whether OpenAI confirms the terms itself, and whether the remaining money arrives at the same $1.25 trillion price.
