MRTNLatest quote

Marten Transport's third-quarter net income rose 30.7% to $2.9 million from $2.2 million a year earlier, helped by higher truckload rates on a smaller fleet and by a swing in non-operating income that accounted for most of the increase in pre-tax profit. Operating income improved 11.9% to $3.1 million. Operating revenue rose 1.3% from a year earlier to $223.2 million, and diluted earnings were $0.04 a share, up from $0.03 a share.

Operating income improved 11.9% to $3.1 million from $2.7 million. Most of the increase in pre-tax profit came from lower down the statement: a line labeled Other contributed $882,000 in the 2026 quarter against $213,000 a year earlier, while income taxes rose to $1.04 million from $725,000. Pre-tax income was $3.95 million against $2.95 million a year earlier. The release does not itemize that Other line. The company reported the results in a Form 8-K earnings release filed October 22, 2026.

Pricing improves while the fleet shrinks

Revenue excluding fuel surcharges declined 5.1% to $184.2 million from $194.0 million.

Fuel surcharge revenue rose to $39.0 million from $26.5 million and did the work of holding reported revenue at $223.2 million. The pricing story sits inside the truckload segment: it earned $4,749 of revenue per tractor per week net of fuel, compared with $4,129 a year earlier, a 15.0% increase, on an average of 1,507 tractors against 1,661, a 9.3% decline in the fleet. More rate per mile on fewer trucks, in other words, rather than growth in capacity.

"The truckload freight market has sharply tightened since earlier this year as renewed and enhanced enforcement of federal and state law is removing a meaningful amount of noncompliant and unqualified driver capacity from the marketplace", Chairman and Chief Executive Randolph L. Marten said in the release. He said the company is securing higher pricing for its premium services, and that its Truckload average rate per total mile, net of fuel surcharges, "increased 14.1% over the third quarter of 2025."

Fuel and health insurance eat the rate gains

Margins improved only slightly: operating expenses were 98.6% of operating revenue, versus 98.8% a year earlier. Mr. Marten pinned the gap on costs rather than pricing. "Despite these positive trends, our earnings were negatively affected by unusually high net fuel and health insurance costs", he said. He measured the drag against the first half's average quarterly level: net fuel rose $3.5 million and health insurance rose $2.0 million, while a larger gain on equipment sales added $1.5 million and higher driver pay cost $1.0 million. Together, he said, the factors "reduced our third quarter net income by $3.7 million, or 4.5 cents per share."

The release also points to the timing mismatch built into fuel surcharges, saying margin pressure "results primarily from the timing lag inherent in truckload industry fuel surcharge programs relative to rapidly rising diesel fuel costs, as well as the higher fuel consumption associated with our temperature-controlled operations." Surcharges recover fuel costs with a lag, so a fast rise in diesel hurts the quarter in which it happens.

Dedicated slips while the truckload loss narrows

Segment detail shows where the quarter diverged. The truckload segment's operating loss narrowed 90.4% from a year earlier, and brokerage operating income rose 25.0%. Dedicated was the weak spot: its operating income fell 63.6%, with average tractors down to 1,013 from 1,142 and revenue per tractor per week, net of fuel, at $3,862 versus $3,776.

The nine-month record is weaker than the quarter. Net income fell 30% to $9.6 million, or 12 cents a share, from $13.7 million, or 17 cents, and operating income dropped to $11.6 million from $18.3 million. Revenue was $650.3 million against $673.5 million; excluding fuel surcharges it was $546.6 million against $593.5 million.

The missing guide, and the next dated document

The release carries no revenue or earnings guidance for the fourth quarter and no conference-call date, so nothing in the filing tests whether the 14.1% rate gain survives the fourth quarter. Comparisons are also muddied by last year's portfolio change: the 2025 quarter included $9.9 million of operating revenue from intermodal operations, which the company sold effective September 30, 2025.

The next dated document is the company's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, which will carry the full financial statements. On capital structure, Mr. Marten described the balance sheet as debt-free: "Our strong, debt-free balance sheet provides the financial flexibility to continue investing in our technology and modern fleet".
