IDEXX Shares Jump 14% on a Third-Quarter Beat and a Raised Outlook
A guidance raise powered mostly by the company's own operations turned a solid print into one of Monday's biggest large-cap moves, with a quieter margin cut tucked inside it.
IDEXX Laboratories shares jumped 14% just after Monday's open, after the pet-diagnostics company beat third-quarter estimates and raised its full-year outlook.
The move reversed a slide in the shares on Friday. Live market coverage counted IDEXX among the top performers in the Nasdaq-100 just after the open. A beat that looked routine on paper became the day's story in the stock.
IDEXX, based in Maine, sells diagnostic tools and software to veterinary practices. Its results are a closely watched read on how much pet owners are spending at the vet.
The quarter, by the numbers
IDEXX reported third-quarter revenue of $1.21 billion for the quarter ended September 30. Revenue rose 10% from a year earlier, as reported and on an organic basis. Organic growth strips out currency moves and acquisitions, so the 10% reflects the underlying business.
Diluted earnings were $4.01 a share, up 18% as reported. Comparable earnings were $3.96 a share, up 22%. The comparable figure removes a one-cent tax benefit from share-based compensation and a four-cent currency benefit.
The Zacks consensus estimate was $3.71 a share. Revenue also cleared the consensus estimate of about $1.19 billion. Reported earnings included a three-cent benefit from a non-operating gain on an equity investment.
For the first nine months, net cash from operations was $1.06 billion. That compared with $826 million a year earlier, per the release's cash-flow statement. Free cash flow for the nine months was $978 million.
Nine-month revenue reached $3.57 billion on the release's statement totals. Nine-month diluted earnings were $11.75 a share. Companion Animal Group supplied $1.12 billion of the quarter's revenue.
Diagnostics did the heavy lifting
Companion Animal Group revenue rose 10%, as reported and organic. The group is IDEXX's business selling diagnostics and software to animal clinics. Its diagnostics recurring revenue rose 11%, with U.S. growth of 10% and international growth of 13% as reported.
VetLab consumables revenue rose 14% as reported and 15% organic. Reference laboratory revenue rose 10%. Rapid assay revenue rose just 1%, as price gains offset lower testing volumes.
The company placed more than 1,900 inVue Dx analyzers in the quarter. The inVue Dx installed base reached nearly 11,000 instruments. The global premium instrument installed base grew 11%.
Capital instrument revenue was flat in the quarter, even with that placement pace. Placements still matter, because installed analyzers pull through consumables and testing later. Veterinary software, services and diagnostic imaging revenue rose 11% as reported.
Water revenue rose 8%, led by North America. Livestock, Poultry and Dairy revenue rose 3%, led by the Americas. Neither segment drives the story, but neither dragged on it either.
Gross margin reached 62.9%, up 110 basis points as reported. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. Operating margin reached 33.1%, up 100 basis points as reported, even as operating expenses rose 10%.
The raise, and the cut inside it
IDEXX raised its full-year revenue outlook to $4.74 billion to $4.77 billion. The prior range was $4.7 billion to $4.75 billion. The increase is $32 million at the midpoint, including $5 million from the CoVet acquisition.
That math means $27 million of the raise came from operations, by TickerGrove's calculation. The company lifted its organic growth outlook to 9.3% to 10.0%. It also raised reported growth guidance to 10.1% to 10.8%.
The earnings outlook rose to $14.96 to $15.16 a share. The prior range was $14.69 to $14.94. The increase is 25 cents at the midpoint.
The offset sits in the margin line. IDEXX lowered its full-year operating margin outlook to 32.1% to 32.3%. The prior outlook was 32.3% to 32.5%, and the company cited acquisition-related impacts.
Innovation is the company's explanation
"IDEXX delivered exceptional third quarter results, reflecting strong commercial execution and momentum from our innovation-driven growth strategy," said Mike Erickson, the president and chief executive.
Erickson pointed to inVue Dx with FNA and Cancer Dx becoming a multi-cancer panel. FNA is fine-needle aspiration, a way of sampling tissue for testing. He also cited CoVet, an artificial-intelligence clinical assistant the company acquired.
The soft spot has not gone away
The demand backdrop is still the weak point in the story. William Blair analyst Ryan Daniels noted that IDEXX and its peers still face weak end-market vet visits. He also pointed to pressure on consumer sentiment, according to the report carrying his comments.
Daniels still called the long-term organic growth outlook achievable. He cited several potential growth accelerants in 2026 and into 2027. The stock's move suggests investors weighed the print and the raise more heavily on Monday.
What remains unknown
What remains unknown starts with whether vet-visit volumes recover. The release does not break out a visit-volume figure for the quarter. Whether the acquisition drag on margins fades in 2027 is also unanswered.
What to watch next
What to watch begins with the fourth quarter. Investors will test whether diagnostics recurring growth can hold at double digits. The margin guide will show whether acquisition costs stay contained. The company's January investor session on its next point-of-care analyzer is the next dated catalyst.
