Hyundai Motor Group said it will invest $15.5 billion in India from 2026 through 2032 after its executive chair met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
A seven-year India bet
Hyundai Motor Group said Tuesday it will invest $15.5 billion in India from 2026 through 2032, framing the country as a core market for growth, exports and next-generation vehicle technology. The plan was discussed in New Delhi when Executive Chair Euisun Chung met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Prime Minister's Office on Oct. 13, according to the group's announcement.
The money is a multi-year commitment, not a single check. Hyundai said the program covers manufacturing expansion at Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, research and development, local supplier development, and future-mobility bets. To run the program, it will set up a dedicated investment entity in India to coordinate capital and seek local partners.
"India remains one of Hyundai Motor Group's most important and strategic markets globally," Chung said in the release. "The past 30 years have been defined by our commitment to India. This investment reaffirms our commitment to India for the next 30 years and beyond." Through the plan, he said, the group aims to create more jobs and support India's industrial development with partners and stakeholders.
Where the dollars go
About $700 million is earmarked for the group's Indian R&D center, including a vehicle testing track, Hyundai said, as it tries to make India a core innovation hub rather than only an assembly base. Manufacturing capacity is already large: more than 1.4 million vehicles a year across Hyundai's Chennai plant (824,000 units), its newer Pune plant (170,000 units) and Kia India's Anantapur plant (431,000 units), with Pune still scaling in phases. The group said the expansion is meant to lift volume while deepening localization for the domestic market and exports.
Hyundai employs more than 24,000 people in India and listed affiliates including Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Transys, Hyundai Capital, Hyundai Wia and Hyundai Glovis among its local component and service operations. On the mobility side, it said it will look at high-potential startups, new mobility services tied to its vehicle business, specialized auto financing, EV charging infrastructure and end-of-life vehicle recycling. It also pointed to social spending of about $110 million since 2016 across welfare, education and skills programs, including the Samarth disability-inclusion campaign and the planned HATS vocational training institute in Chennai.
Why India, and why now
India's passenger-car market has been setting records. Industry body SIAM data cited by CNBC showed August sales of 439,000 units, up more than 36% from a year earlier. Hyundai is the third-largest car company in India by April–August passenger-car sales (247,980 units), CNBC reported, after ranking fourth in the financial year ended March 2026 behind Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors.
That competitive squeeze matters for the capital plan. Hyundai Motor India raised $3.3 billion in its 2024 IPO, the largest ever in India at the time, CNBC noted. The India-listed shares closed at 1,964.90 rupees on Tuesday, up about 1% from the prior close of 1,945.00 rupees, according to Yahoo Finance quote data retrieved the same evening in New York.
The Hindu and CNBC-TV18 separately confirmed the $15.5 billion figure, the 2026–2032 window, the Modi–Chung meeting and the roughly $700 million R&D allocation from Hyundai's statement, so the core claims do not rest on a single outlet.
What it does not settle
Hyundai did not break the $15.5 billion into year-by-year spending, name plant-by-plant capacity adds, or say how much will be equity versus debt at the new investment entity. It gave no separate timeline for EV charging, recycling or financing verticals beyond the seven-year umbrella. Readers should treat the announcement as a strategic commitment announced Oct. 13, not as capital already deployed.
Hyundai plans to put $15.5 billion into India through 2032
Hyundai Motor Group said Tuesday it will invest $15.5 billion in India between 2026 and 2032. The plan covers factories, research labs, local suppliers and new mobility ideas such as EV charging. About $700 million is set aside for an R&D center and test track. Hyundai already builds more than 1.4 million vehicles a year in India and employs more than 24,000 people there. The announcement followed a New Delhi meeting between Hyundai's executive chair and India's prime minister. The money is a multi-year plan, not a single payment, and Hyundai still trails Maruti and others in parts of the local ranking.

What is still unknown
Hyundai has not broken the $15.5 billion into annual tranches, named plant-by-plant capacity additions, or said how the new India investment entity will be capitalized. It gave no separate schedules for EV charging, recycling or auto-finance verticals beyond the seven-year umbrella.
