What “Source checked” means

Generac Holdings has signed a long-term agreement to supply backup generators for Amazon's data centers, with initial deliveries expected to total about $2.4 billion in 2027 and 2028, according to a regulatory filing disclosed Wednesday evening. The customer, identified in the filing as Amazon Data Services, is one of the hyperscalers Generac has been courting as AI-driven power demand surges.

The deal

The agreement runs deeper than a purchase order. Generac issued a warrant to Amazon.com NV Investment Holdings for up to 1.69 million shares at $200.93 apiece — about 15% above Wednesday's close. Roughly 308,000 shares vested immediately, with the rest vesting in tranches tied to cumulative generator purchases, up to $8 billion. The warrant is exercisable through September 2033 and represents nearly 3% of Generac's outstanding shares.

A note on the numbers, since they matter: the roughly $340 million figure attached to the warrant is the estimated value of the warrant itself — not the commercial agreement. The supply agreement's initial deliveries are worth $2.4 billion, and the $8 billion figure is the purchase threshold at which the full warrant would vest, not a committed order.

The market reaction

Generac shares surged more than 40% in extended trading Wednesday, according to Reuters, and carried the momentum into Thursday. The stock jumped as high as $231.89 in early trading — up from Wednesday's close of $175.11 — before settling around $208 in midmorning, still up nearly 19%. The move put Generac shares up more than 60% on the year.

Analysts moved quickly. Canaccord's George Gianarikas called the agreement a "strong endorsement of Generac's ability to establish a competitive foothold in this nascent subsegment," kept a Buy rating, and raised his price target to $375 from $275. William Blair analysts wrote that the deal "is a massive win for Generac and provides clarity regarding the demand underpinning management's recently announced plan to triple manufacturing capacity for large-format generators by August 2027." Cantor Fitzgerald called it the company's most important data-center disclosure since its first hyperscaler win, keeping an Overweight rating and a $333 target.

Why it matters for Generac

For a company best known for residential generators sold at Home Depot and Costco, the data-center business has become the growth story. Generac reported total annual revenue of $4.2 billion in 2025; the Amazon agreement's initial deliveries average $1.2 billion a year across 2027 and 2028. In its July earnings report, the company said commercial and industrial sales rose 29% in the second quarter and that its data-center backlog had reached roughly $1.6 billion — excluding committed volume from what it then called a second hyperscaler customer, now revealed as Amazon.

The structure is also familiar from Amazon's playbook: the company has previously issued warrants to suppliers tied to its AI and cloud infrastructure buildout, including hydrogen producer Plug Power and air cargo contractor ATSG.

What's next

The immediate question is execution: tripling capacity by 2027 is an aggressive sprint, and any delay in Amazon's data-center buildout would flow straight to Generac's numbers. The warrant structure also means Amazon's stake grows only as it actually spends, which aligns interests but caps the upside of the $8 billion figure.

Longer term, the deal positions Generac as a credible vendor in the race to power AI data centers, where backup generation is becoming strategic infrastructure rather than an afterthought. If the 2027–28 deliveries land on schedule, the residential-generator company will have completed an improbable transformation: from storm season to the AI boom.
