Flexsteel sales rise 3.2% from a year earlier but operating income falls 23.3%
Fiscal first-quarter net sales rose 3.2% to $114.0 million but GAAP operating income fell 23.3% as a 150-basis-point gross-margin decline, mostly peso and energy costs, met higher SG&A. Diluted earnings were $1.24 a share.

Figures cover Flexsteel's fiscal 2027 first quarter ended September 30, 2026, from the Form 8-K Exhibit 99.1 filed October 26, 2026, with prior-year comparisons from the first-quarter release filed October 20, 2025.
Flexsteel Industries reported fiscal first-quarter net sales of $114.0 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, up 3.2% from $110.4 million a year earlier, while GAAP operating income fell 23.3% to $6.9 million as a 150-basis-point decline in gross margin, mostly peso translation and energy costs, combined with a higher SG&A ratio to absorb the sales gain. The Dubuque, Iowa, furniture maker earned $5.4 million, or $1.24 a diluted share, against $7.3 million, or $1.31 a share, in the prior-year quarter.
Flexsteel brand sales rose 5.1% to $112.6 million from $107.1 million, with casegoods roughly flat, while the homestyles ready-to-assemble line the company is winding down fell 57% to $1.4 million from $3.3 million.
Branded seating carries the sales line as homestyles exits
Chief executive Derek Schmidt said "orders increased 5 percent" from a year earlier and the closing backlog "grew 8.2 percent versus the prior year period", calling both evidence of "the underlying strength of our business". Sales growth of 3.2% came on top of a 6.2% increase in the year-earlier quarter, when the company reported net sales of $110.4 million against $104.0 million.
Peso translation and energy costs take 130 of the 150 basis points lost from gross margin
Gross margin was 22.0% against 23.5% a year earlier. The release attributes 130 of the 150 basis points lost to an unfavorable gross-margin impact from foreign-currency translation of its peso-denominated assets in Mexico, and the rest mainly to inflation driven by elevated energy prices. The year-earlier base was itself currency-aided: the prior-year release attributed part of its 200-basis-point gross-margin increase to favorable peso translation. The release also gives Schmidt's figure for the same peso exposure: "$800,000 or 70 bps" of operating margin. On the quarter's $114.0 million of net sales, its 130 basis points of gross margin work out to about $1.5 million, while Schmidt cited $800,000, or 70 bps, for the same exposure, and the release supplies no bridge between the two. Operating margin fell to 6.0% from 8.1% as gross margin narrowed and SG&A rose to 16.0% of net sales from 15.4% on spending for consumer insights, new products, marketing and talent. Schmidt also said ocean transportation rates have "nearly doubled over the last six months". Tax expense of $1.5 million implied an effective rate of 21.8%, close to the 21.9% rate a year earlier.
Repurchases and tax withholding leave cash at $4.4 million
Cash fell $12.27 million to $4.4 million at September 30 from $16.68 million at June 30, and was $38.6 million a year earlier. Working capital was $80.5 million with about $29.1 million available under the secured line of credit, against $116.9 million and $54.1 million a year earlier. In the cash-flow statement, which is reported in thousands, the quarter used $1.47 million of cash in operations and $6.54 million to withhold shares for employee tax payments, alongside $2.2 million of share repurchases, $1.1 million of dividends and $1.0 million of capital spending. Net income fell 26.0% to $5.4 million from $7.3 million, and diluted earnings per share fell 5.3% to $1.24 from $1.31 on a diluted share base that shrank to 4.37 million from 5.6 million, so the per-share decline was cushioned by a smaller diluted share base than a year earlier.
Guidance targets a 6.5% to 7.0% operating margin for December
For the fiscal second quarter, Flexsteel guides sales of $119.5 million to $123.0 million, growth of 1% to 4%, or 3.5% to 6.5% excluding the homestyles exit, and a GAAP operating margin of 6.5% to 7.0% against the 6.0% reported for the September quarter. The company lists consumer demand and energy-driven logistics and material inflation as the main sources of variability, and Schmidt expects the environment "to remain challenging". Management takes questions on a conference call and webcast scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. Central Time. The release carries no analyst consensus figure, so it supports year-over-year comparison but not a beat or a miss.
