Fabrinet Revenue Jumps 51% to a Record as Data Center Demand Outruns Its Costs
Adjusted profit surged on the optical maker's record sales — but a new minimum tax, a private-stake loss and heavy factory spending held standard profit and cash far behind.
Fabrinet reported record first-quarter revenue of $1.47 billion on Monday, up 51 percent from a year earlier and above its own guidance range.
Fabrinet makes optical packaging and precision components for other manufacturers. Its products go into data centers, communications networks, cars and medical devices. The company is based in Bangkok, Thailand.
It reported results for its first fiscal quarter, ended September 25, 2026. The release came after the market close on Monday, November 2.
A clear beat on the single consensus frame
Analysts expected non-GAAP earnings of $4.19 per share, on the Zacks consensus frame. Fabrinet reported non-GAAP earnings of $4.34 per share. Non-GAAP figures are the company's adjusted measures, labeled as such at every use.
Revenue beat the same frame. The Zacks revenue estimate was $1.40 billion for the quarter. Fabrinet reported $1.47 billion, the release's statement shows.
Zacks put the revenue surprise at 5.00 percent. Both the estimate and the surprise come from the same Zacks report. No other published estimate set is carried in this article.
Data centers supplied more than half the sales
Data center revenue was $777 million in the quarter, management said on the earnings call. That is up 78 percent from a year earlier. It supplied 53 percent of total revenue, the call disclosure shows.
Communications infrastructure revenue was $444 million, up 35 percent. Automotive, industrial and other revenue was $253 million, up 20 percent. The revenue breakdown comes from the call, not the release.
“Fiscal year 2027 is off to an excellent start with record revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share that were well above our guidance ranges,” said Seamus Grady, chairman and chief executive officer of Fabrinet.
“Broad-based demand across multiple significant programs drove these results, with new product ramps further supporting our growth,” Grady said. The company entered the second quarter with what he called exceptional momentum.
Why standard profit rose only about 8 percent
On the standard GAAP basis, net income was $103.5 million. That is $2.86 per diluted share. A year earlier it was $95.9 million, or $2.66 per share.
GAAP profit rose only about 8 percent, an article calculation. Two items the company excludes from its adjusted figures explain most of the gap. Both appear in the release's reconciliation table.
The first is a $21.5 million loss on revaluing a stake in a private company. The release line reads non-marketable equity securities revaluation. The statement shows $21.46 million for the item.
The second is $19.9 million of tax tied to Pillar Two, the global minimum tax rules. The release shows $19.89 million for that tax provision. The adjusted figures exclude both items.
Non-GAAP net income was $157.4 million in the quarter. That is $4.34 per diluted share. A year earlier it was $105.3 million, or $2.92 per share.
Margins held near 12 percent
GAAP gross profit was $173.8 million, a gross margin of 11.8 percent. Non-GAAP gross profit was $178.0 million, a margin of 12.1 percent. Gross margin is the share of revenue left after production costs.
Operating income was $146.0 million on the GAAP basis. Non-GAAP operating income was $158.5 million, a margin of 10.8 percent. The adjusted figures add back share-based pay and smaller items.
Growth consumed cash in the quarter
Cash flow from operations was $21.3 million in the quarter. Fabrinet spent $158.7 million on property, plant and equipment. The spending builds factory capacity ahead of customer payments.
Non-GAAP free cash flow was negative $137.4 million. The release defines it as operating cash flow minus capital spending. A year earlier it was positive $57.3 million, the reconciliation shows.
Inventories and receivables rose as programs ramped. The company also drew new long-term borrowings during the quarter. Its balance sheet shows borrowings that were absent in June.
A bigger buyback and a higher guide
The board added $103.0 million to the share repurchase program. The addition brings the total authorization to $637.3 million. A repurchase authorization is permission to buy stock, not a purchase itself.
For the second quarter, Fabrinet guided revenue to $1.6 billion to $1.65 billion. GAAP earnings are guided to $3.81 to $3.96 per diluted share. Non-GAAP earnings are guided to $4.77 to $4.92 per share.
The guide rests on about 36.2 million diluted shares. The second quarter ends December 25, 2026. Guidance is the company's expectation for work not yet done, not a result.
The guide sits above the Zacks coming-quarter frame. That frame expects earnings of $4.47 per share on $1.49 billion in revenue. The guided GAAP-to-adjusted gap includes another $0.60 per share of Pillar Two tax.
Shares rose about 10 percent in after-hours trading on Monday. That is the snapshot in The Motley Fool's reaction piece, published at 4:36 p.m. Eastern Time. The stock had fallen 3.85 percent in the regular session, before the release.
What remains unknown
What remains unknown starts with cash recovery. The release does not say when operating cash flow turns positive again. It also does not say how much of the capacity spending is already committed.
The Pillar Two tax recurs inside the second-quarter guide. Whether it stays near $0.60 per share after that is unstated. The release gives no full-year outlook beyond the second-quarter guide.
What to watch next
What to watch next starts with second-quarter delivery against the guide. Revenue inside the $1.6 billion to $1.65 billion range would confirm the trajectory. The data center share of sales will show whether demand held its pace.
Then watch operating cash flow and the buyback. A cash recovery would ease the funding question. Buyback purchases while free cash flow stays negative would sharpen it.
