ExxonMobil's Refineries Out-Earn Its Oil Fields for the First Time in at Least Six Years
A war-driven fuel squeeze made refining the profit engine, and the company is banking the windfall against debt instead of bigger payouts.
ExxonMobil beat third-quarter profit expectations on Friday as its refining business earned more than its oil and gas production for the first time in at least six years.
ExxonMobil reported third-quarter 2026 results on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, for the three months ended Sept. 30.
The company is the largest United States oil producer by market value. Its shares trade in New York under the ticker XOM.
Reported earnings, on a U.S. GAAP basis, were $15.4 billion, or $3.72 per share. GAAP is the standard United States accounting basis.
Adjusted earnings were $17.5 billion, or $4.23 per share. Adjusted results are a non-GAAP measure that strips out identified items and timing effects.
Analysts had expected adjusted earnings per share of $4.08, an average compiled by LSEG, Reuters reported. The delivered figure cleared that average.
Adjusted earnings in total were expected at $16.6 billion, Reuters reported. The company delivered $17.5 billion on that basis.
Refining did the heavy lifting
Energy Products is the segment that houses ExxonMobil's refineries. It earned $7.17 billion on a reported basis in the quarter.
Upstream, the oil and gas production segment, earned $7.09 billion on the same basis. Refining came out ahead, narrowly, on reported figures.
On an adjusted basis the gap was wider. Energy Products earned $9.05 billion adjusted, against $7.31 billion for Upstream.
ExxonMobil is earning more from refining than from upstream for the first time in at least six years, Reuters reported.
Adjusted downstream earnings totaled about $9 billion, a 120% surge from the second quarter, Reuters reported. Higher refining margins drove the jump.
The margin surge was war-driven. Fighting knocked out fuel-making capacity and tightened diesel supply, Reuters reported.
The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on refineries in Saudi Arabia and Russia lifted margins, Reuters reported. ExxonMobil ran its United States refineries near full rates.
Its U.S. Gulf Coast refineries ran at 100% crude unit utilization in the quarter. They also posted the second-highest U.S. Gulf Coast diesel production on record.
Upstream held roughly flat
Upstream production was 4.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. That was roughly flat from 4.51 million in the second quarter.
Adjusted upstream earnings were about $7.3 billion, down 20% from the second quarter, Reuters reported. Lower Brent crude prices were the drag.
The quarter also brought cumulative production milestones. Guyana and Kearl each passed one billion barrels, and PNG LNG passed 100 million tons.
Chemical Products earned $735 million reported and $725 million adjusted. Specialty Products earned $1.29 billion reported and $1.28 billion adjusted.
Specialty products adjusted earnings rose 32% from the second quarter, Reuters reported. Higher basestock margins drove the increase, the release said.
The windfall went to the balance sheet
Cash flow from operating activities was $25.7 billion. Free cash flow, a non-GAAP cash measure after investment, was $19.1 billion.
Cash capital expenditures were $7 billion in the quarter. That is the cash cost of investment in the business.
Shareholder distributions totaled $9.4 billion in the quarter. That split into $4.3 billion of dividends and $5.1 billion of share repurchases.
ExxonMobil reduced debt by $8 billion during the third quarter, Chief Financial Officer Neil Hansen said, Reuters reported.
Net debt stood at $22.1 billion on Sept. 30. The release counts total debt of $34.3 billion less $12.2 billion of cash and equivalents.
Year to date, net debt has fallen by nearly $11 billion, the release said. The balance sheet, not bigger payouts, took the windfall.
The company held its 2027 share repurchase plan at $20 billion. That is the same level as the previous two years, Reuters reported.
It also declared a fourth-quarter dividend of $1.07 per share. The dividend is payable Dec. 10 to shareholders of record on Nov. 16.
The declaration extends the streak to 44 consecutive years of annual dividend increases.
Investing to make more fuel
ExxonMobil is investing more in its refineries, including its Baytown complex in Texas, Hansen told Reuters. The aim is to increase fuel production.
United States distillate production will grow by another 100,000 barrels per day through those investments, the company said in prepared remarks. It gave no timeline.
On the Gulf Coast, the Beaumont refinery expansion has helped lift distillate production by about 40% since 2019, Chief Executive Darren Woods said.
Brent crude swung from $68 to $132 a barrel during the quarter. Chevron's chief financial officer cited that range as a measure of volatility, Reuters reported.
Shares gained on Friday afternoon
ExxonMobil shares traded at $186.38 at 3:21 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, up 1.69% on the day, according to StockAnalysis data. That afternoon snapshot is the single reaction figure used here.
What remains unknown
What remains unknown is how long refining margins this wide can last. The margins rest on capacity knocked out by war, and that capacity can return.
Also unknown is the timing of the planned distillate growth. The company gave no schedule for the added 100,000 barrels a day.
What to watch is whether debt keeps falling at this pace. Investors will also watch whether a stronger balance sheet later converts into faster distribution growth.
