Eaton Posts Record Quarter and Raises Organic Growth Guidance
Adjusted earnings hit a record and segment margins topped guidance, with electrical orders and backlog still climbing faster than the capacity Eaton is adding.
Eaton reported record third-quarter sales and raised its full-year organic growth guidance on Tuesday, as electrical orders and backlog climbed to records.
Eaton makes the electrical equipment that moves power through data centers, utilities, factories and aircraft. The third quarter, ended September 30, tested whether that demand is still accelerating. On the company's own numbers, it is.
Record results on sales, earnings and margins
Sales rose 28 percent to a record $8.95 billion, the company reported. Organic sales, meaning growth excluding acquisitions and currency, rose 19 percent. Acquisitions added eight percent and foreign exchange added one percent.
Adjusted earnings were a record $3.68 a share, up from $3.07 a year earlier. The adjusted figure excludes $0.62 a share of intangible amortization. It also excludes $0.30 of acquisition and divestiture charges, partly offset by $0.01 of restructuring income.
Reported GAAP earnings were $2.77 a share, up from $2.59 a year earlier. Net income attributable to Eaton shareholders was $1.08 billion. Adjusted earnings, on the company's reconciliation, were $1.43 billion.
Analysts expected adjusted earnings of $3.54 a share, according to the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The beat was about 4.0 percent, a TickerGrove calculation. Zacks also put the revenue beat at 5.48 percent against its own estimate.
Segment margins, meaning operating profit across the business segments as a share of sales, reached a record 25.3 percent. That was 30 basis points above both the high end of the guidance range and a year earlier. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point.
“Our strong third quarter performance reflects the focus and discipline our teams have demonstrated all year,” chief executive Paulo Ruiz said. “Record orders grew sequentially, backlog continued to expand,” he added. He tied both to customers' power infrastructure investments.
Electrical demand drove the quarter
Electrical Americas sales were a record $4.17 billion, up 22 percent organically. Operating profit was a record $1.24 billion. The segment margin was 29.8 percent, up 230 basis points from the prior quarter.
Electrical Global sales were a record $2.73 billion, up 58 percent. Organic growth contributed 27 percent, and the Boyd Thermal acquisition contributed 31 percent. Operating profit was a record $576 million, and the margin was 21.1 percent.
Orders on a twelve-month rolling basis rose 39 percent organically in Electrical Americas. They rose 51 percent in Electrical Global and 20 percent in Aerospace. The Electrical businesses' book-to-bill ratio, orders divided by sales, was 1.2, so orders ran ahead of shipments.
Backlog told the same story. It rose 33 percent in Electrical Americas and 121 percent in Electrical Global. Aerospace backlog rose 33 percent. Those are comparisons with September 2025, as reported in the release.
Aerospace sales were a third-quarter record $1.2 billion, up 11 percent. Operating profit was a record $298 million, though the margin narrowed to 24.9 percent. Mobility sales were $852 million, with organic growth of nine percent, and its margin widened to 17.2 percent.
Mobility is the segment Eaton formed this year from its former Vehicle and eMobility businesses. The release reports it as one segment, with recast history. Eaton plans to separate Mobility in a transaction with Dana expected in early 2027.
Cash flow and the COL Group agreement
Operating cash flow was $1.31 billion in the quarter. Free cash flow, the cash left after capital spending, was $1.03 billion. Capital spending was $275 million, per the release's reconciliation.
Eaton also detailed its agreement to acquire COL Group, an Italian maker of medium-voltage distribution equipment. It will pay €810 million, or $921 million at the exchange rate stated in the release. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.
COL Group has about 400 employees and makes switchgear that avoids a potent greenhouse gas. It will sit inside Electrical Global. The purchase extends Eaton's European power distribution footprint for data center and utility customers.
Guidance raised for the full year
For the full year, Eaton announced it now expects organic growth of 13 percent to 15 percent. Its headline describes that range as a raise. These are company forecasts announced today, not reported results.
Full-year adjusted earnings guidance is $13.70 to $13.80 a share. Reported earnings guidance is $10.39 to $10.49 a share. Segment margins are expected at 24.1 percent to 24.5 percent for the year.
For the fourth quarter, Eaton expects adjusted earnings of $4.05 to $4.15 a share. It expects reported earnings of $3.28 to $3.38 a share. Organic growth is again expected at 13 percent to 15 percent, with segment margins of 25.4 percent to 25.8 percent.
What remains unknown
What remains unknown starts with the size of the raise itself. The release states the new organic growth range but not the prior one. Readers cannot measure the increase from this release alone.
It is also unknown how fast the record backlog converts into shipments. Orders are running ahead of sales, and Eaton is still investing in capacity. The release does not say when the added capacity fully relieves the constraint.
The COL Group closing depends on regulatory approvals the release does not detail. The Mobility separation with Dana also remains subject to approvals. Neither transaction's final timing is settled.
What to watch next
What to watch next is the fourth quarter against the announced ranges. Adjusted earnings of $4.05 to $4.15 a share is the first test. Organic growth of 13 percent to 15 percent is the second.
Watch backlog conversion and the Electrical Americas margin. Another quarter near 29.8 percent would show the capacity investments paying off. The COL Group close, expected in the first quarter of 2027, is the dated deal test.
