TickerGrove

The U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration released Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims as USDL 26-1430-NAT, embargoed until 8:30 a.m. Eastern Thursday, August 27, 2026. In the week ending August 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 203,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 206,000 to 207,000. The 4-week moving average was 205,500, an increase of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 204,000 to 204,250.

What changed

The locked headline print is 203,000 seasonally adjusted initial claims for the week ending August 22, down 4,000 from the previous week's revised 207,000. Do not treat the unrevised 206,000 as last week's official level. The four-week moving average is 205,500, up 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 204,250. That average was revised up 250 from 204,000. Insured unemployment is a week behind: for the week ending August 15, the advance seasonally adjusted count was 1,778,000, down 18,000 from the previous week's revised 1,796,000. That week was revised down 3,000 from 1,799,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent, unchanged. These are advance administrative counts from ETA 538. They are revised the following week on ETA 539.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 169,786 in the week ending August 22. The regular-state-programs table prints year-ago seasonally adjusted initial claims of 229,000 for the comparable week. Unadjusted 169,786 is a different series from the seasonally adjusted 203,000 headline. This page does not convert one into the other.

Why it matters

Initial claims are a weekly administrative count of new filings for unemployment insurance, not the monthly unemployment rate and not payrolls. The Department says an initial claim is filed after a separation from an employer and requests a determination of basic eligibility. The same notes say the U.S. initial-claims count is a leading indicator because it is an indication of emerging labor market conditions, and that these weekly administrative data are difficult to seasonally adjust, making the series subject to some volatility. Those are the Department's notes. They are not a TickerGrove forecast of the labor market, a recession call, or a Federal Reserve signal.

What to watch

The advance prints come from ETA 538, Advance Weekly Initial and Continued Claims Report. The following week, initial claims and continued claims are revised from ETA 539, Weekly Claims and Extended Benefits Trigger Data Report, which reflects claimants by state of residence. The next weekly claims release would revise this week's 203,000 advance. This page does not print an economist estimate, a payrolls print, or the BLS unemployment rate.

A claims print is not the unemployment rate

The Labor Department printed 203,000 seasonally adjusted initial claims for the week ending August 22, down 4,000 from the previous week's revised 207,000. That is a weekly count of new unemployment-insurance filings. It is not the monthly unemployment rate and not payrolls.

Keep the revision, the four-week average, and the lagging insured-unemployment week on separate lines

Use 203,000 as the advance seasonally adjusted initial-claims print and 207,000 as last week's official revised level. The unrevised 206,000 is the revision starting point, not last week's official level. The four-week average is 205,500 versus a revised 204,250. Insured unemployment of 1,778,000 is for the week ending August 15, not August 22. Unadjusted 169,786 stays next to, not instead of, the seasonally adjusted headline.

What we do not know

This page does not invent an economist estimate or a beat/miss. It does not treat this claims print as the unemployment rate or as payrolls. It does not convert unadjusted 169,786 into the seasonally adjusted 203,000, or the reverse. It does not print a Federal Reserve path or a recession call. The next weekly claims release would revise this week's advance. That revision is not on this page.
