Comfort Systems USA reported third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday for the period ended Sept. 30, 2026, beating consensus on revenue and earnings and lifting backlog to $17.81 billion, and in a separate release said Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Bill George will retire after the fiscal 2026 annual report filing, with Julie Shaeff to succeed him.

The quarter beat the single published expectation tally used for every comparison in this article. That tally put expected earnings at $12.71 a share, and Comfort Systems reported diluted earnings of $13.91 a share - an earnings surprise of 9.44%, as reported by that tally - on revenue of $3.77 billion, up 53.7% from $2.45 billion a year earlier, with revenue surpassing the same tally estimate by 12.45%. Net income was $489.0 million, up 67.7% from $291.6 million, calculated by TickerGrove from the reported figures. Operating cash flow was $1.01 billion against $553.3 million a year earlier, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were $667.9 million, or 17.7% of revenue, against $413.9 million and 16.9% a year earlier.

A $17.81 billion backlog, built in one quarter

Backlog as of Sept. 30, 2026 was $17.81 billion, up from $14.06 billion as of June 30, 2026 and $9.38 billion a year earlier - sequential growth of $3.8 billion that Chief Executive Brian Lane attributed to relentless demand - with same-store backlog at $17.39 billion against $9.38 billion a year earlier. The year-over-year backlog increase exceeds $8.0 billion, and the backlog now stands at roughly 4.7 times the revenue of the quarter just reported, calculated by TickerGrove. Third-quarter electrical revenue grew 84.8% year over year while mechanical revenue increased 42.7%, with strong data-center activity driving much of the same-store growth, particularly in Texas operations and modular work.

Cash flow topped $1 billion in a single quarter

Gross profit was $934.5 million, holding at 24.8% of revenue, as selling, general and administrative expenses fell to 8.3% of revenue from 9.4%, lifting operating income to $624.6 million, or 16.6% of revenue, from $378.9 million and 15.5%. Free cash flow was $805.6 million in the quarter after $210.6 million of purchases of property and equipment, cash and cash equivalents reached $2.16 billion at Sept. 30, 2026, and long-term debt was $43.8 million. For the nine months, revenue was $9.90 billion, net income was $1.30 billion, or $36.94 a diluted share, and operating cash flow was $2.54 billion. Lane said, "Strong ongoing demand and consistent excellence by our teams resulted in extraordinary results across every metric this quarter," and noted remarkable cash flow exceeding $1 billion in a single quarter.

The beat was sold anyway

Investors sold the print anyway. The shares closed down 8.7% at $1,279.37 in the regular session on Thursday and fell a further 5.4% to $1,209.78 in after-hours trading, as reported that evening. The timing matters: both releases were issued after the regular close, so the closing decline preceded the earnings news, and the after-hours decline is the reaction that belongs to this story. No cause for either decline beyond the reported releases is verified in this article, and none is asserted.

A co-founder hands the finance job to a 25-year insider

In the separate leadership release, the company said Bill George will retire following the filing of its annual report on Form 10-K for the year ending Dec. 31, 2026, completing a 30-year career. George helped found the company in 1997 and has served as chief financial officer since May 2005, helping guide its formation and initial public offering, the development of its acquisition program and its disciplined capital allocation approach. Julie Shaeff, senior vice president and chief accounting officer, will be promoted to executive vice president and chief financial officer effective when George vacates the role. Shaeff has been chief accounting officer since May 2005 and an integral part of the finance organization for over 25 years, and Lane said her deep knowledge of the operations, judgment and leadership make her the ideal person to lead the finance function going forward.

What to watch next is the Oct. 23 conference call at 10:00 a.m. Central Time, whether the backlog converts at the profitability Lane projected - he said the company is well-positioned to grow organically through year end and for 2027 and to maintain high levels of profitability and solid ongoing cash flow - and whether labor costs and supply delays, flagged as execution considerations alongside the quarterly filing, weigh on converting a $17.81 billion backlog. The transition timetable is fixed to the annual report filing, so the finance handover lands after the fiscal year closes, not mid-quarter.
