Chubb's Q3 core operating income falls 2.2% from a year earlier as catastrophe losses more than double

Net income rose 1.5% from a year earlier to $2.84 billion, and buybacks lifted core operating EPS 0.8% to a record $7.66, but catastrophe losses were the main driver of an 8.8% year-over-year fall in P&C underwriting income.

Chubb Limited said third-quarter net income rose 1.5% to $2.84 billion, or $7.30 a diluted share, while core operating income fell 2.2% to $2.98 billion, or $7.66 a share, as catastrophe losses climbed to $705 million from $285 million, partly offset by higher favorable prior period development. For the first nine months, core operating income and per-share profit were records at $8.60 billion and $21.94, up 21.0% and 24.5% from a year earlier.

Consolidated net premiums written were $15.1 billion, up 1.9% from a year earlier, with P&C premiums up 1.9% and Life Insurance up 1.4%. The premium line grew; the underwriting profit did not.

Catastrophe losses and reserve releases split the underwriting result

P&C underwriting income was $2.06 billion, down 8.8% from a year earlier, and the P&C combined ratio rose to 84.1% from 81.8%. The loss and loss expense ratio accounted for the deterioration, rising to 58.7% from 56.7%, while the policy acquisition cost ratio rose to 18.3% from 17.7%.

Two items moved those ratios in opposite directions. Pre-tax net catastrophe losses were $705 million, against $285 million in the prior-year quarter, while favorable prior period development rose to $511 million from $361 million. Stripping out both, current accident year underwriting income excluding catastrophes was $2.26 billion, up 3.3%, and its combined ratio was 82.6% against 82.5% — evidence that the underlying book priced and reserved roughly as it did a year earlier.

The segment tables show where the catastrophe load landed. North America Personal's combined ratio improved to 60.3% from 65.1%, helped by higher favorable development. Overseas General's combined ratio rose to 86.4% from 83.3%, including a 5.0 percentage point increase from higher catastrophes, and North America Commercial's rose to 86.3% from 81.5%, including a 3.1 percentage point catastrophe increase and a mix shift away from property. North America Commercial net premiums written fell 2.7% from a year earlier, or rose 1.7% excluding large account property and financial lines exposure changes.

Investment income and buybacks lift a flat profit picture

Pre-tax net investment income was $1.79 billion, up 8.6% from a year earlier, and adjusted net investment income, which includes income from certain private equity partnerships, was a record $1.89 billion, up 6.3% from a year earlier. Evan G. Greenberg, Chubb's chairman and chief executive, tied that to rates, saying the result was "supported by rising interest rates and an excellent fixed-income investment environment".

The company returned $1.57 billion to shareholders in the quarter: $1.18 billion of buybacks at an average price of $344.32 a share and $393 million of dividends. Diluted shares fell to 389.4 million from 400.9 million, which is why core operating income per share rose 0.8% to $7.66 even as core operating income fell 2.2%.

Book value absorbed a bond-market mark. Book value per share was $191.43, up 5.1% from September 30, 2025, and tangible book value was $126.96, up 5.7% from a year earlier, after $4.48 billion of after-tax net realized and unrealized investment losses, partly offset by $551 million of foreign currency gains. Excluding accumulated other comprehensive income, book value per share was $216.22 and tangible book value $150.70, up 11.1% and 15.4% from a year earlier.

Chubb also said Strategic Holdings, its holding company partnership with KKR, agreed to sell its investment in USI Insurance Services to Aon, expected to produce a realized gain of $460 million on an investment of $740 million.

Nine-month records, a competitive commercial market and the October 21 call

Nine-month net income was $8.02 billion, or $20.46 a share, up 12.9% and 16.2% from a year earlier, and core operating income was $8.60 billion, or $21.94, up 21.0% and 24.5%. For the quarter, annualized core operating return on tangible equity was 21.6% and core operating ROE was 14.9%; for the nine months the figures were 21.2% and 14.6%.

Greenberg framed the quarter against a soft catastrophe base a year earlier: "Due to particularly light CAT losses last year, earnings are down 2% and up 1% per share from 2025." He added that "the market continues to grow more competitive in commercial P&C across the board," while "the substantial majority of our underwriting businesses grew in the quarter". Of the commercial division he said: "I fully expect North America commercial growth to improve in future quarters."

One comparability caveat sits over every adjusted figure here. Effective in the third quarter, Chubb redefined segment income and core operating income to exclude intangible amortization on purchased intangibles other than long-term distribution agreements, and restated prior periods, so the year-over-year adjusted changes are like-for-like only under the new definition.

The release carries no full-year guidance and no consensus figures, so the results cannot be scored as a beat or a miss from the filing alone. The next dated input is the third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, which Chubb will webcast at investors.chubb.com.
