Caterpillar Beats Estimates, Holds Its Full-Year Growth Guide, and Shares Fall Sharply

A record backlog and a power boom were not enough — investors wanted a raise, and a softer fourth quarter is what they heard instead.

Caterpillar's third-quarter sales rose 17% to $20.7 billion and beat expectations, but the company held its full-year growth guide and shares fell sharply.

Caterpillar Inc. reported third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026. The quarter covered the three months ended Sept. 30, 2026.

Sales and revenues were $20.68 billion, up 17% from $17.64 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected $20.55 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Adjusted profit was $7.20 a share, up from $4.95 a year earlier. The average analyst expectation was $7.08 a share, according to LSEG data.

Reported profit was $7.13 a share, up from $4.88 a year earlier. Adjusted results excluded restructuring costs in both years, the company said.

The beat was narrower than in recent quarters, Reuters noted. Caterpillar had topped expectations by at least 40 cents in each of the last four quarters.

“Our third-quarter results reflect the durability of our end markets, with strong order rates and a record backlog,” said Joe Creed, Caterpillar's chairman and chief executive.

Volume and price both carried the quarter

Higher sales volume added $2.2 billion to the total. Favorable price realization added another $663 million.

Operating profit rose 38% to $4.214 billion. Reported operating margin was 20.4%, up from 17.3% a year earlier.

Adjusted operating margin was 20.6%, up from 17.5%. Finance chief Kyle Epley put the increase at 310 basis points on the earnings call.

Enterprise operating cash flow was $4.4 billion in the quarter. Caterpillar ended the quarter with $7.9 billion of enterprise cash.

The company deployed $1.2 billion for share repurchases. It paid a further $700 million in dividends.

Power and Energy led the segments

Power and Energy sales rose 18% to $8.784 billion. Segment profit rose 31% to $2.143 billion.

Power generation sales rose 30% to $3.421 billion. Growth came mainly from turbines and large reciprocating engines, primarily for data center use.

Construction Industries sales also rose 18%, to $7.983 billion. Resource Industries sales rose 15% to $4.615 billion.

Financial Products revenue rose 9% to $1.177 billion. Every primary segment grew at a double-digit rate.

Order backlog reached a record $78.1 billion. It rose $6 billion from the prior quarter, Reuters reported.

A tariff recovery sat inside the profit

Operating profit included $128 million of IEEPA tariff recoveries. Those are refunds of tariffs imposed under an emergency-powers law.

Adjusted results excluded only restructuring costs, the release said. The recovery therefore lifted both profit measures, and it may not repeat.

Caterpillar kept its full-year tariff cost forecast near $2.2 billion. That forecast assumes no further recoveries in the fourth quarter, executives said.

Guidance held, and the fourth quarter moderated

On the earnings call, Creed kept the full-year outlook unchanged. Caterpillar still expects 2026 sales and revenues to grow in the mid to high teens.

Analysts expected growth in the high teens, near 18%, Reuters reported. Holding the range therefore read as a step down in ambition.

For the fourth quarter, Epley anticipated moderate sales growth. He noted the company is lapping a strong quarter a year earlier.

Consensus for the fourth quarter stood at $21.42 billion, TIKR reported. That tally called for about 12% growth from $19.1 billion a year earlier.

A seasonal dealer inventory cut adds a headwind in Construction Industries. Epley expected a reduction near $1.6 billion in that segment.

He put the related volume headwind near $1 billion, year over year. Strong sales to users, he said, continue behind that cut.

Executives said capacity remains the pacing factor in Power and Energy. Bringing new engine and turbine capacity online takes time, they told analysts.

Bernstein analyst Chad Dillard wrote that the “beat and raise streak ends,” Barron's reported. Caterpillar had raised its 2026 guidance after the first and second quarters.

Two peers raised a day earlier

Context, not a Caterpillar result: GE Vernova and Vertiv both raised 2026 guidance on Wednesday, Oct. 28. TIKR noted both moves in its Caterpillar analysis.

GE Vernova's orders rose 96% organically to $29 billion, TIKR reported. Vertiv lifted its full-year sales guidance by $650 million.

Shares fell hard late in the session

In late trading on Thursday, Oct. 29, Caterpillar shares traded at $646.96, down 9.31%, as of 3:40 p.m. ET, The Motley Fool reported.

That snapshot is a late-session print, not the close. The closing price may differ from the 3:40 p.m. level.

Oppenheimer analyst Kristen Owen called the beat's quality “a chink in the CAT armor,” Reuters reported. She made the remark despite broad-based growth, Reuters added.

What remains unknown

What remains unknown is whether moderate fourth-quarter growth satisfies a market priced for raises. Backlog is at a record, but conversion depends on new capacity.

Also unknown is how much tariff cost and freight pressure offset price gains. What to watch is fourth-quarter sales, margin, and any change to the tariff forecast.

What to watch next is the January update. Caterpillar's fourth-quarter results and first look at 2027 are due in late January, TIKR reported.
