CASSLatest quote

Cass Information Systems earned $10.6 million in the third quarter of 2026, or $0.81 per diluted share, 16.1% and 19.1% more than a year earlier, as net interest margin widened to 4.02% from 3.87% and financial fees grew 11.8%. Revenue rose $2.6 million, or 5.3%, from a year earlier to $52.7 million, with Cass reporting income-statement amounts in thousands of dollars. The board also lifted the quarterly dividend by $0.02 to $0.34 a share.

Net interest margin carries the quarter

Net interest income rose $1.9 million, or 8.9%, to $22.89 million from the third quarter of 2025. The margin widened to 4.02% from 3.87%, and return on average equity climbed to 17.46% from 15.29%. Cass credits a 24 basis point increase in the yield on loans and a 33 basis point increase on investment securities, plus a 24 basis point decline in the average cost of total deposits, to 1.38% from 1.62%; a 55 basis point fall in short-term investment yields worked against it. Average interest-earning assets grew $105.4 million, or 4.8%, from a year earlier. The fee lines split. Financial fees, charged when Cass makes customer payments, rose $1.2 million, or 11.8%, from a year earlier, helped by a 15.8% increase in average payments in advance of funding and by higher interchange within CassPay. Processing fees fell $763,000, or 4.6% from a year earlier, on lower transportation and facility invoice volumes.

Freight dollars climb while the loan book shrinks

Transportation dollar volumes processed increased 14.5%, and average dollars per traditional freight invoice reached $1,115, up 17.2%; in September 2026 the average was $1,152, which the company reads as a sign the figure will keep rising into the fourth quarter. Facility expense invoice volume slipped 1.2% from a year earlier to 4.0 million, but facility dollar volume rose 5.5% to $6.6 billion as higher electricity and gas prices lifted the average invoice 6.9% to $1,631. Loans went the other way, falling $38.3 million, or 3.5%, from June 30, 2026 as faith-based borrowers paid off debt or refinanced at other institutions. Cass booked a $508,000 charge-off on a nonperforming commercial real estate loan during the third quarter of 2026, its first loan charge-off in over a decade, while nonperforming loans still fell $537 billion to $0, or 0.10% of total loans at September 30, 2026.

Bond losses pull tangible capital lower

Investment securities increased $65.7 million from June 30 after Cass bought $82.0 million of Treasury and government agency securities at a 4.00% weighted average rate and $28.1 million of mortgage-backed securities at 5.42%. The unrealized loss on the portfolio widened $34.4 million to $75.3 million, and the accumulated other comprehensive loss grew $26.2 million, cutting shareholders' equity $18.6 million to $226.04 million. The tangible common equity ratio fell to 8.16% from 9.03% even as the leverage ratio held at 10.11%, against an objective of approximately 10.00%. Cass repurchased no shares in the third quarter, citing asset growth it wanted to fund from earnings, and directed capital to the dividend instead: the board declared $0.34 a share, up $0.02 or 6.3%, payable December 14 to holders of record December 4.

Operating costs are set to grow faster from here

Third-quarter expense growth was modest. Personnel expense rose 0.1%, or $41,000, from a year earlier as salaries and commissions increased 2.9% and average full-time-equivalent employees fell 6.6% to 895; equipment expense rose $424,000 and other expense $880,000, or 12.1%, on business development and technology-related professional fees. Management said growth accelerates in the fourth quarter and 2027, citing the onboarding of two large CassPay clients, depreciation on AI-enabled systems moving into production, more software licensing, higher profit sharing and rising health costs. "Recent CassPay and Facilities client wins, combined with higher transportation and facility dollar volumes, present us with an enviable outlook for continued growth in assets, net interest income and financial fees in coming quarters", Chief Executive Martin Resch said in the release, pointing to the revenue side of that spending.

The release carries no numeric revenue or earnings guidance and no consensus figures against which to measure the quarter, so it supports no beat-or-miss claim. It does fix a near-term test: Cass expects loans at December 31, 2026 to be flat with September 30, and 6-8% loan growth in 2027 and beyond, a forecast that depends on deposit costs holding near current levels so the margin gains survive.
