A refining-led beat strengthened the balance sheet in a single quarter, and management chose legacy liabilities as the first call on the surplus.

BP reported underlying replacement cost profit of $8.46 billion for the third quarter, its highest quarterly result in at least five years and well above expectations.

BP reported third-quarter 2026 results on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, for the three months ended Sept. 30.

Replacement cost profit is BP's preferred underlying earnings measure. It strips out inventory holding effects and one-off adjusting items.

The $8.46 billion underlying result compares with $5.73 billion in the second quarter. A year earlier, the same measure was $2.21 billion.

A company-provided analyst poll had expected $7.33 billion, Reuters reported. The result beat that poll by about 15%, a TickerGrove calculation.

Reuters said BP data showed the highest quarterly profit since at least 2021, and all three business units beat expectations.

Refining margins drove the beat

The refining indicator margin reached $46.7 a barrel in the quarter. That compared with $29.6 in the second quarter and $15.8 a year earlier.

Customers and products delivered underlying profit before interest and tax of $6.95 billion. A year earlier, the segment made $1.72 billion.

Reuters said that segment's pretax result beat a $6.3 billion average estimate, the strongest beat in the quarter.

Gas and low carbon energy contributed $3.18 billion before interest and tax. Oil production and operations contributed $3.53 billion on the same basis.

Total revenues and other income were $69.88 billion, against $49.25 billion a year earlier. Upstream production was 2.22 million barrels of oil equivalent a day.

Reported profit trailed the underlying result

Reported profit attributable to BP shareholders was $4.7 billion. That compared with $1.16 billion a year earlier, the release showed.

Replacement cost profit itself was $3.1 billion in the quarter. The gap to the underlying figure reflects adjusting items, net of tax.

Adjusting items included post-tax net impairments of $4.0 billion. BP said they were linked largely to its transition businesses.

Operating cash flow was $14.83 billion, against $7.79 billion a year earlier. Capital expenditure was $3.04 billion in the quarter.

Underlying profit was 54.37 cents per ordinary share, or $3.26 per American depositary share. BP announced a dividend of 8.660 cents a share, flat against the second quarter.

Net debt fell to $13.87 billion at Sept. 30, from $22.25 billion at the end of the second quarter. That is an $8.4 billion reduction in one quarter.

The windfall goes to Deepwater Horizon

Chief executive Meg O'Neill said BP has now delivered its net debt and structural cost reduction targets.

Reaching the 2027 net-debt target a year early frees the next decision. BP agreed last week with Louisiana to accelerate its Deepwater Horizon settlement commitments.

The Louisiana settlement is $350 million, and its payment timing is still to be determined.

"Our intent is now to prioritize the use of excess cashflow to address our remaining Deepwater Horizon liabilities in full," she said.

Gulf of America oil spill payables and provisions stood at $5.94 billion. Reuters put the same remaining balance at $5.94 billion.

The 2010 disaster killed 11 rig workers, Reuters noted. O'Neill called it a tragedy and said eleven men lost their lives.

"This has generated a strong set of results, supported by the higher-price, higher-margin environment," O'Neill said.

Guidance points to a December reset

As guidance, BP now expects full-year reported upstream production of 2,210 to 2.25 million barrels a day. The 2025 comparison is 2.31 million barrels a day.

For the fourth quarter, guidance puts reported upstream production at 2,090 to 2.23 million barrels a day. That outlook includes continued disruption in the Middle East.

Full-year capital expenditure guidance still stands at $13.5 billion to $14.0 billion. Divestment proceeds are now expected at about $8 billion in 2026.

That proceeds figure includes about $6 billion from the Castrol divestment. BP will give a strategy and outlook update on Dec. 15.

Shares rose in early trade

BP shares rose 1.3% in early European trade on Friday, Reuters reported. That early-trade snapshot is the single reaction figure used here.

Reuters framed the quarter against the war on Iran. It said the conflict had boosted energy prices and refining margins across the sector.

What remains unknown

What remains unknown is the exact timing of the full Deepwater Horizon settlement. Beyond Louisiana, BP has stated intent, not a payment schedule.

Also unknown is whether refining margins stay anywhere near this quarter's level. Guidance calls them elevated but sensitive to supply costs and market conditions.

What to watch is the Dec. 15 strategy and outlook update. Investors will also test whether cost progress holds once the windfall fades.
