Berkshire Hathaway's Operating Profit Slips as GEICO Claims Costs Climb
The drag was car insurance, not catastrophes — while the cash pile grew and the buyback accelerated.
Berkshire Hathaway's operating earnings fell 5.8% in the third quarter, a TickerGrove calculation, as higher claims costs at GEICO, its auto insurer, cut underwriting profit sharply.
The quarter's story sits in insurance, not in the stock portfolio. The documents cover the quarter ended September 30, 2026. This is a quarterly report under Chief Executive Greg Abel, who took over as CEO on January 1, 2026; Warren Buffett stepped down as chairman in September 2026.
Net earnings attributable to Berkshire shareholders fell to $22.112 billion from $30.796 billion a year earlier. That is a decline of 28.2%, a TickerGrove calculation.
Investment gains shrank to $9.407 billion from $17.311 billion, down 45.7% on the same calculation basis. Berkshire itself cautions that quarterly investment gains are "usually meaningless."
GEICO's claims bill did the damage
Insurance underwriting earnings fell to $1.352 billion from $2.369 billion after tax. That is a decline of 42.9%, a TickerGrove calculation, and the pre-tax detail points to one name.
GEICO, Berkshire's auto insurer, earned $982 million before tax, down from $1.773 billion. That is a fall of 44.6%, a TickerGrove calculation.
Its loss ratio — claims costs as a share of premiums earned — rose to 76.6% from 71.5%. The increase is 5.1 percentage points, and it came from the claims side, not from shrinking premiums.
The Form 10-Q attributes the pressure to higher claims frequencies and average severities. It also cites lower average earned premiums per policy.
GEICO's premiums written were nearly flat at $11.714 billion, against $11.744 billion a year earlier. Premiums earned rose slightly, to $11.405 billion from $11.264 billion.
Underwriting expenses rose $246 million in the quarter, up 17.0%. Over nine months, bodily-injury claim frequency rose in a four-to-six percent range, while severity rose nine to eleven percent.
The rest of insurance leaned the same way
BH Primary's pre-tax underwriting earnings fell to $119 million from $506 million. Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group earned $582 million before tax, down from $884 million, for total pre-tax underwriting earnings of $1.683 billion against $3.163 billion.
Inside reinsurance, property and casualty earned $779 million before tax, against $1.065 billion a year earlier. Retroactive reinsurance lost $167 million, and periodic payment annuity lost $175 million.
