Barclays opened the European bank earnings season with a split print — a double-digit profit rise and fresh capital returns on one side, and an investment bank carried by equities while its larger fixed-income engine shrank on the other.

Barclays reported third-quarter results on Thursday, Oct. 22, with pretax profit of £2.3 billion for the July to September period, up 12% from £2.1 billion a year earlier — a rise that still left the print slightly below the average of analysts' forecasts of £2.4 billion, roughly £100 million short of consensus rather than in line with it. The capital return softened the miss: a new share buyback of £500 million, equivalent to $669.85 million at the rate of $1 to 0.7464 pounds given with the results.

Equities carried the investment bank while fixed income shrank

Investment bank income was £3.1 billion, up 1% from a year earlier but below forecasts of £3.3 billion. Equities revenue rose 47% to £1 billion, helped by higher prime finance and derivatives fees, and the gain beat the average 37% rise across the top five United States banks, according to a calculation from company statements. Income from fixed income, currencies and commodities trading fell 19% to £1 billion, a steeper drop than the 5% decline among its United States peers, and investment banking fees rose just 2% to £656 million as debt capital markets revenue fell 8%.

Dealmaking cooled after a frantic second quarter

The fee line tells the wider story of the quarter. Dealmaking slowed across Wall Street after an exceptionally strong second quarter of 2026: investment banking fees at the top five United States banks rose 7% from a year earlier in the third quarter, against a 48% jump in the second quarter, while global dealmaking fees have reached $96.5 billion so far in 2026, up 14% on the prior year, according to data provider Dealogic. Barclays is trying to take more of that pool — it set out last October to lift its investment banking fee share toward 4% from 2.9%, where it sits in seventh place — and it reshuffled the leadership of the unit again in August, hiring a Bank of America executive, Mike Joo, as co-chief executive of the investment bank alongside the head of global markets, Adeel Khan.

The cost programme is now cutting headcount

Costs are the other half of the print. The bank carried out technology-enabled job reductions in the third quarter, booking structural cost actions of £201 million in the period with a further £300 million planned for the final three months of the year. The savings programme is expected to affect around 5,000 staff, or 5% of total headcount, in 2026, the bank said in a presentation alongside the results, and it spent £65 million in the quarter on changes to how it pays its material risk takers, skewing senior bankers' pay further toward bonuses.

A budget six days away hangs over the season

Barclays is the first major European lender to report this season, and its numbers arrive six days before the United Kingdom budget on Oct. 28, where further taxes on banks may be levied in the first budget from finance minister John Healey. That timing matters more than the small consensus miss: what investors still need is whether the buyback pace survives any new bank levy, whether fixed-income revenue recovers as dealmaking normalises, and whether the cost actions land without hollowing out the markets business that produced the equities surge. No settled share-reaction figure was available from a single source at publication, so none is stated.
